Meh. It was no Holland Czech Republic. Now that was a football game.   yes

After the first break, it was great, but that doesn't excuse the first half...I almost turned off.

So do you think Liverpool should be allowed to defend their title?

I say yes of course, one has to be able to defend their title. Even if they didn't quality, it's not really the 'Champions League' anyhow when 3rd and 4th place can play. Liverpool are European Champions so they should get okayed to play.

Congrats to Liverpool. I went to work when Milan were 3-0 up and couldn't believe it when I heard the final score!

Ur exactly right - Liverpool not being in next season's competition is just silly, their place would be taken by some god-awful Latvian team - it doesn't make sense to leave Liverpool out, or for all the shite teams that clog the champions league to be in there anyway

Well, it's also unfair and unjust if "some god-awful Latvian team" were denied their place to allow Liverpool to get in. They earned their spot in the champions league just as any other team in the Champion's League did. I do hope Liverpool are give their chance to defend their title, but not if it means another team are denied their hard earned place in the competition

Agreed, the Latvian team deserve their spot.

Liverpool may not have qualified for their spot by being English champions, but by being European Champions, so it's only fair that the European Champions play in the European Champions League.

Things are looking up for Liverpool anyhow, they should be able to secure some good singings now with the extra money and status they have got. Put those around the likes of Gerrard, Hyppia (sp?) and Morientes, it will be a strong side. Even Carragher has proved me wrong.

Sigh

1. The Latvian team was purely an example - i don't even know of any Lavian teams

2. Liverpool wouldn't cost anyone there place - there would just be an additional qualifying round

^ You're right, but you can add on to the end of your "...be an additional qualifying round" that "ergo, by default somebody would lose their place; because one more team than usual would exit in the qualifying round"

But, doesn't that mean there would be one too many teams in the UEFA Cup? I'm confused.

I'm really divided about the should they / shouldn't they, in all honesty....I don't know.

if they can fit them in without costing anyone their palce then they should get in. If someone else has to give up their spot (or even chooses to drop out, as that completely devalues the competition) then they shouldn't get in. The rules were set out beforehand and everyone knew that the only way to get in to the champions league was the come fourth or above in the league. Maybe the rules should've been different from the start, but that doesnt mean we can move the goalposts now just for sentiments sake.

Diego Forlan just won the golden boot (shared with Henry) for 25 goals - the same Forlan that scored so few for Man Utd - damn the Spanish league must be terrible!

Well, seeing as it's Mathematically impossible for Liverpool to be in the Champions League next season without them costing somebody their place, being it a team from a designated country or just a team that wouldn't have exited in the qualifying round otherwise.

So....

....Looks like you're with me on this one.  Grin

Anyone see Ireland's World Cup qualifier today? Although I seem to be beating a dead horse on this one (pardon the pun) as I said the same thing when United were beaten in the FA cup final, we were robbed! 2-0 up after 8 minutes to draw 2-2, absolutely shocking! The turning point was definitely Robbie Keane being taken off after about the 25th minute, until then we were on top. And Keane was doing a lot of the work to get us there. When he was taken off for his shoulder injure which (God forbid) might have him out for our next game, we lost our tempo, I think it was a hit to the Boys' confidence as he was really keeping the game in our favour. And the referee didn't help much either. Their first goal from the free kick should not have been a free kick, but the penalty decision can't really be disputed. However there was many penalty appeals that didn't go our way that I felt should have. Another thing that got on my nerves was the Israeli goal-keeper, any contact he got he was on the ground holding his face. Even if he was hit in the shoulder or whatever. Even the commentators were getting highly frustrated at this, when their job is giving a neutral account of the game, although I do totally agree with them. However all the blame can not be pitched on the poor referee and the incredibly un-fair and sneaky Israeli side, we had a lot of chances we should have scored but didn't.

Any thoughts?

Hasselbaink finished top goalscorer there too a few years ago!  It's probably easier phisically to play in Spain.

But I have no bad words for Forlan, he scored CRUCIAL goals in Man Utd's last Premiership winning season, with Chelsea,Arsenal and Liverpool

Neatherlands just beat Finlad 2-0 in World Cup qualification. Scotland and Bulgaria are still 0-0.

van Persie is becoming a better player then i would have thought, after seeing him on Arsenel.

Liverpool are in, which is good, but 3 qualifying rounds and less money - i suppose its fair considering they are lucky to be in at all

Fenerbahce have been handed instant promotion to the UEFA Champions League group stages after the decision to allow Liverpool to defend the trophy.?

With the Merseysiders granted entry via the first qualifying round, the Turkish champions have moved forwards from their scheduled third qualifying round start.
?
Wisla Krakow and Steau Bucharest or Dinamo Bucharest will also benefit from the Uefa executive committee's decision.
?
Dundee United are one of the teams that have been boosted in terms of the Uefa Cup as they no longer have to qualify for the competition.
?
"I don't think it was very difficult because the executive committee started discussing the principle for the future that the winners should be able to defend their title," stated chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson to Sky Sports News.
?
"So the Liverpool case was a consequence of that decision.
?
"We discussed different alternatives and consequences for different teams.
?
"The rules were looked at a few months ago. The question is what kind of impact does it have, for example, on the domestic competitions.
?
"From time to time, there are different opinions and different majority views on how the leagues should be organised."
?
As for Liverpool being cut in to receive a slice of the revenue afforded to English clubs in the competition, Olsson admitted Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton have not been contacted about this development.
?
"I haven't spoken to the clubs about this," he revealed. "It is The FA we are talking to about these matters, not the individual clubs. It'd be strange if the clubs are not supporting this in any case but this is now a fact.
?
"[Meanwhile], a busy schedule is Liverpool's business."
?
Olsson said it was not a difficult decision to exclude Manchester City from the Uefa Cup as the Eastlands outfit were keen to fill the gap left by Liverpool's elevation to the Champions League.
?
"I think we have to keep quotas," he declared. "That was also a decision from the committee when it comes to the Champions League and the Uefa Cup."
?
Liverpool could face Everton in the third qualifying round for Europe's premier competition, which would be a remarkable development.

We're waiting ok
