What are your thoughts on Thompson getting the axe as assistant?

Ironically he's our most succesfully manager in the last decade league wise at any rate - when he took charge from Gerrard (when he had those heart probs) we finished second

I imagine Rafa will be bringing in his own men - all managers do this so it was only  a matter of time untill Thompson went

You might just get through ahead of Wales but we're taking the group.

Scottish people rule................

Southampton manager Gordon Strachan on Wayne Rooney: It's an incredible rise to stardom. At 17 you're more likely to get a call from Michael Jackson than Sven Goran Eriksson.

Reporter: Gordon, Do you think James Beattie deserves to be in the England squad?
Strachan: I don't care, I'm Scottish

Reporter: "Gordon, can we have a quick word please?"
Strachan: "Velocity" [walks off]

Reporter: Welcome to Southampton Football Club. Do you think you are the right man to turn things around?
Strachan: No. I was asked if I thought I was the right man for the job and I said, "No, I think they should have got George Graham because I'm useless."

Reporter: Is that your best start to a season?
Strachan: Well I've still got a job, so it's far better than the Coventry one, that's for sure.

Reporter: Are you getting where you want to be with this team?
Strachan: We're not doing bad. What do you expect us to be like? We were eighth in the league last year, in the cup final and we got into Europe. I don't know where you expect me to get to. Do you expect us to win the Champions League?

Reporter: Gordon, you must be delighted with that result?
Strachan: You're spot on! You can read me like a book.

Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yoghurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado.

Reporter: This might sound like a daft question, but you'll be happy to get your first win under your belt, won't you?
Strachan: You're right. It is a daft question.. I'm not even going to bother answering that one. It is a daft question, you're spot on there.

Reporter: Bang, there goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home, become an alcoholic and maybe jump off a bridge. Umm, I think I can take it, yeah.

Reporter: There's no negative vibes or negative feelings here?
Strachan: Apart from yourself, we're all quite positive round here. I'm going to whack you over the head with a big stick, down negative man, down.

Reporter: Where will Marion Pahars fit into the team line-up?
Strachan: Not telling you! It's a secret.

Reporter: You don't take losing lightly, do you Gordon?
Strachan: I don't take stupid comments lightly either.

Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there....

Owen, Baros and Cisse. Now that's an attack!  ok

I hear Stevie Gerrard is staying. If that's true, then credit to him for being loyal. He loves the club and I would have been disappointed to see him go. We need another midfielder tho methinks. Any ideas Izzy?

Definately need another midfielder who can play wide.

Another two class signings and I think Liverpool could become a feared team again.

I don't think Liverpool need to change too much in terms of new signings.  I think you've got a very good squad of players, and need a great manager to tie them together.

Don't know enough about this new guy to make a prediction on how they'll do.

My thoughts exactly

We have always had the players - but never got the best out of them

Benitez can hopefully sort this problem out - Houllier's style of play was awful and with a better one in place the team will go far

I still think a few more signings wouldn't hurt though- a new defender or two, a winger of sorts - if Kewel takes the left then something down the right - and maybe a more creative midfielder to replace Haman - Ballack has been linked in a swap deal for Haman....

Apparently Davids is goind to Tottenham. That's Shocked.  Does he know that they're crap?  I know he's not been on form lately but still...

I think it's good that Gerrard is staying.  It would have just made the league even more about money and not about loyalty.  Also, wherever he'd gone, Arsenal or Chelsea, that team probably would have won the league...imagine Viera and Gerrard in the centre of midfield.  They would destroy everyone else.  I'm glad he's not going anywhere.

How can they be your thoughts exactly when you have just suggested new players for 4 positions!  Tongue

Murphy, Diao, Hamann, Biscan, Carragher, Finnan are good players but not good enough to challenge for the title IMO. Great squad players though, that's how I would be using them.

You are spot on Izzy, you need a creative midfielder next to Gerrard and a wide man out right.

Kewell needs to be played out wide on the left, as much as wants to play up front or in a free role, it's the best position for him considering the lack of left sided quality out there and the fact that there are plenty of good players will can play up front or in that creative role.

That'd be class. I'd love to see him and Nedved in the premiership, but not at Chelsea, they suck.

Well - u can always do better - we do have a good squad but thats not the same as a league winning squad - a few signings here and there and Liverpool can become that.

I doubt anyone gives a fuck, but I'm excited, so I'll post it.

Preston have signed Glentoran and N. Ireland striker Andy Smith for a fee of ?150,000. Smith recently rejected a move to MK Dons (aka Wimbeldon).

Woo! Preston now have Healy & Smith. Hopefully Smith will be more than a fringe player for Preston, and these two can get a partnership going. This will be great news for N. Ireland if they can. Watch this space. Cheesy

My next prediction: Shea Campbell to be playing professional football in a season or so time. He's already had trails with Oldham and Colchester, but he had a pretty poor season at Ballymena, but if he can grab the 30 odd goals again this season as he did season before last, I'm sure he can give Smith some competition in the N. Ireland squad, and get that gobshite Quinn out of the team for good.
