That percussion overdub in the middle of the song really kills the solo for me.

You know what's a trip?
This sounds like a song Paul McCartney would write. That isn't a negative. I love the Beatles...and I love going to Paul concerts.
Kind of trip for me now that ive heard it a few times. Its definately more McCartney then Queen.
I kinda hear a little "hey jude" on the " na na laaa na na aaaa" part.
Sigh, HannaHat NEVER gets any credit
hehehe

Catcher wasn't mindblowing, but every song on an album can't be. It grooved, the vocals were cool, and it was different from the others which gave it it's own cool sort of identity. In fact, the four songs to be leaked and cleaned up (Better, IRS, Catcher, There Was a Time) are all different in their own way, which I like. Catcher isn't a favorite, but when it's on the album I'll be grooving along to it.

Yeah, you've got a point. We can't expect every new song to be life-changing, but it's a good change of pace. To me, it'll probably end up feeling like another Out Ta Get Me or Bad Obsession -- An excellent song that's just a decent Guns N' Roses song.

I don't think anyone could handle an album full of mondblowing 'big guns'. We aren't going to know which songs are the big guns until the album comes out as a complete work and we get some singles. Hell, I figure Madagascar to be the be all and end all of mindblowing songs, but who knows, it could end up being so called 'filler'.
Thats my problem with these leaks - there is little context for them, and we don't know how finished they are - no matter how un/clean they may sound. It's exciting to have new stuff, but it's not necessarily proof of how CD will 'sound'. Unless of course you believe that these leaks were no accident...

I listened 3 or 4 times last night b4 bed-time. It didn't grab me immediately like the 1st 3 did. I thought so-so. After 2 or 3 listens today, I like it. My wife (not a big music fan) enjoyed this the 1st time. I AM getting CITR from the library tonight. I better watch out for the black helicopters.
(Conspiracy Theory reference)
Axl's got such fuckin balls to open his heart up like this. Absolutely dynamic.
BTW, is JD Salinger still alive? Axl and JD definitely have something in common, eh?

I think CITR might be too deep to become a hit single. Axl's lyrics and singing style are depressive, its a hit or miss type song. But with the way radio has become (shit) it has as good a chance as anything out there.
I listened to the song twice, thats enough for now.

I think this song is going to have a November Rain effect on people. Most people did not like NR when they first heard it, people were like WTF is this? Then the more you hear it, the better understanding you had of it. I think the same will hold true for CITR for the people that dont like it. This song shows how much Axl has matured. The song when its a real song and not a demo is going to blow the doors off NR, just watch. This song is simply amazing.

Very melodic with a strong content. This song not only means something but it is a bit risky since it is about the murderer of a music icon. I think critics will appreciate it for taking a chance and being one of the more literate songs to come alone in quite some time.
Give Catcher a read and check back. There is alot being said on this track.

'Catcher In The Rye' is an amazing track, but you have to give it time. You need to listen to it several times to dig it, but then you can't stop listening to it. I'm starting to love it, but I still consider TWAT as the best new song.
About Brian May playing in this track, I dont know if this was posted or not, but here's a nice article from
http://www.queen-fip.com/

BM ON LEAKED GNR MATERIAL...?
One of the biggest stories flying around the music industry at the moment is the leaking of several new Guns N' Roses tracks which are thought to be taken from the long awaited 'Chinese Democracy' album. One track, the lastest track to emerge, is 'Catcher In The Rye' which includes two short melodic bursts of some very Brian May-like soloing. Nothing has been 100% confirmed but Brian has heard the track and confirms it could well be him!
Brian spent some time with Axl Rose over in an LA recording studio in 1998.
Other tracks to have been heard include: 'The Blues', 'TWAT' or 'There Was A Time', 'Better' and 'IRS'. Guns N' Roses have confirmed several festival dates across Europe including Sunday 11th June at Download.

That's a really interesting aspect of the whole thing that I haven't seen discussed that much here. ?I was actually thinking that there could be a negative response from some people, because it is kind of a narration of chapman's thoughts. ?When I first heard about this song I kind of thought it was going to be more about Lennon and it would deal more with the aftermath of the killing and how it created a void in alot of people's lives. ?I think some might say that it is just feeding Chapman's ego because part of the reason he said that he killed lennon was because of identity issues and how when he killed lennon, everyone would know his name and he wouldn't be a nobody anymore. ?Well with a song being written about him, I could see some people making the argument that this song is in Chapman's mind, lending even more creedence to his horrible act. ?
I dunno, should be interesting to see what peoples reactions to it will be though. We all know Axl has a way of stirring up controversy.?
