Axl cannot put that photograph of Lennon signing the autograph of MDC on the cover of this single. He probably will get some grief from Lennon fans who think the song is in bad taste: beatles (hey jude) type melody about the mind of a Beatle killer. Further celebritizing Chapman is not something the world needs. The film Chapter 27 will do alot for this embattled killer than he deserves already.
The song is great and I hope Axl can explain more why this song tributes Lennon.
The song is about Lennon's killer. I wonder why. Axl wore a mansion shirt during the UYI tour. Maybe he has a thing for killers. Blind Melon have written the best song about a killer (Ed Gein) 'Skinned' from the 'Soup' album. Cacther in the Rye has similar sounds in it that Blind Melon used to use (oh). On the subject of songs about killers, Slayer have a good one too called Dead Skin Mask also about Ed Gein, subject matter aside, it is a killer of a song
In this case, the victim was a cultural icon with a huge fanbase. There are no doubt more people who could potentially get offended about a MDC song than for the two families who suffered at the hands of Ed Gein.
That is a valid point you make. Catcher in the Rye could attract a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons, which is possibly the reason behind it.

I love the Beatles and I think only an idiot would be offended by the song. I don't think Axl has any explaining to do.

Someone who thinks celebritizing a killer is wrong is not an idiot. One of the reasons MDC killed Lennon was to become famous. He has accomplished that. The same rationale compelled John Hinckely to shoot Ronald Reagan. So much time has passed since Lennon's death, it might now be a non issue.
I am not offended by the song, in fact I think lyrically it is bold and briliant. But I can see how some could be. I am only bringing up a potential development.

Why explain? Isnt it speculation that its a tribute to Lennon? I remember hearing that along time ago also, but who said it? Magazine? Producer? Axl??
You shouldnt say he cannot use the photograph. Clearly he can. It would stir some controversy thats for sure, but since when does Axl shy away from that? I really dont think the song "celebrates" Chapman, but I know what you meant. The less attention he gets, the better. But if anyone in the world is gonna bring up this issue, I cant think of a better way to do it than Axl with this song.

It is a poignant and moving song. People do forget that in a tragedy like Lennon's murder, MDC is in some ways a victim himself, a wasted life who felt inalienated by society and moved to commit murder in order to achieve accomplishment. Very sad.

Chapman is a total asshole and doesnt deserve any attention. He fanticized about killing Lennon because he couldnt be someone like Lennon. and he worshiped Lennon when he was younger, but when got older saw Lennon as a false prophet. The guy was a confused dickhead, kind of like Hinckly shooting the president so he can get noticed.

Whats your point? Aren't most killers "assholes"? Big deal. I like the fact that Axl is taking a bold approach to the Chapman/Lennon thing. Its brilliant.

I think the reason Axl was motivated to do this song, was in part his experience with his own stalker who made it inside his house. ?He could have been killed if the circumstances had been different. ?
So the song, is a viewpoint from the mind of these people who obsess with a celebrity as giving meaning to their lives.

Just a statement like "Chapman is an asshole" "wanted to be famous" is just way to simplistic.
Yes he was nuts...but tortured.
http://www.crimelibrary.com/classics4/chapman/
And I think this is a tribute to Lennon. ?I remember the day he was shot. ?I was 5 years old and I can remember standing right next to the Piano in our house...i can remember my parents talking about it...and my oldest sister crying.
My next door neighbor was like 13 and I remember just watching his face as he was crying....just thinking why is he crying?
And hearing this song made me think about all that stuff...will make a lot of people remember that day a 1/4 of a century ago. ?What more of a tribute is there than that?

What's brilliant to one is garbage to another. It just depends on your taste, and how you look at things I guess.

He was schizophrenic. These people that suffer from schizophrenia and voices in the head, i guess there's a fine line between keeping the situation under wraps and flipping the other way and letting it all come out. Here in the UK instead of keeping these types of people locked up in metal homes, the new law sets patinets free, for care in the community. And time and time again the papers report that another care in the community schizophrenic has stabbed, shot or killed again just like they have in the past.

99% of people that hear most of GNR's certified classics will never call it crap. I'm confident that atleast 50% of people will think these leaks are. I'm am not only nervous about the final album but dissapointed in the leaks so far. This may turn out to be one big fucking bomb.

When treated with drugs, people with Schizophrenia can live happy, normal lives. From the looks of your post I would assume that you would rather have these people locked away.

True, but the ones that dont take their meds are completely insane. One of my aunts is schizophrenic. Total nut job. One time, I was at her house talking to her and she was cooking tacos. Out of the blue, she took all her dishes and smashed them on the floor, while yelling a bunch of shit I could hardly understand. A few years ago, I was at my grandpa's house and she came there in the middle of the night saying how some old indian man from the 1800's wearing war paint tried running her over in a diesel truck. People like that are capable of anything.

They should be assessed. Some can't be sorted out and shouldn't be tossed out into the community to repeat their ways.

I might be capable of that too if i was preparing tacos. Taco's smell awful
. I would chalk that incident up as a moment of normalcy.
