Free speech?

« on: December 08, 2006, 11:14:30 AM »

I am bringing this topic over from the "Release Date rumor" thread.  It didn't belong there.

Regarding the song "What do you want to be" off the Slash's first Snakepit album "It's five o'clocke somewhere", was this written about Axl Rose?

Here are the lyrics?

What Do You Want To Be

Sour, this affliction
If it was me I'd have it fixed
And with everywhere you've been
You're much too old to be so naive

So what the hell do you want to be
Following the trends that never end
I can't stand the parties you attend
So what the hell do you want with me

Oh, you're so underground
Oh, ain't that swell
Well the word is on the street
You're collecting sympathy and
then you hide
And ya ain't been out in days
Will the sunshine burn your face
Preserve your precious skin
I'll go out, you stay in

What the hell do you want to be
Following the trends that never end
I can't stand the parties you attend
So what the hell do you want with me

Please don't feed the pigeons
Out of the same sad bag of tricks
I've heard it all a million times
You make me sicker than
the wine you drink

So if you think I need some help
Climb out of your own shell
It'll make you think

So what the hell do you want to be
Following the trends that never end
Why is it that I can't
stand your friends
So what the hell do you want with me
What the hell do you want to be
Following fashion in the sheets
Chasing every other flavor
of the week
So what the hell do you want from me

What do you want to be
What do you want to be
What do you want to be
What do you want from me
Looking for anyone who's somebody
What do you want from me
What do you want from me

Take it Away looks like it could be about Axl too, though it could just be a coincidence.

Here's the reply I posted on the other thread:

About that song from Slash's album, I don't think Slash wrote lyrics, did he?

Anyway, I do remember something interesting about it.  Violent J of ICP had Slash as a guest on one of ICP's songs, Halls of Illusions.  In his book, J says this:

"Before Slash would play, he asked me if the song was about Axl, because of Use Your Illusion, and I told him no.  So then he went on about what an asshole Axl is and how he once wrote an entire album about Axl, and Axl didn't even know it."

Anyway, I just thought someone might like to know that.

I doubt it. GN'R were still together when 5 o'clock was out and Dover wrote lyrics for half the album. It's like saying TWAT is about the old band.

In the liner notes, it says the song was written by Slash, Matt Sorum, and Eric Dover.  It doesn't go into details about who wrote what part.

If it's true maybe that's why Matt got fired?

I would bet the lyrics to 'What do You Want to Be' had nothing to do with Matt getting fired.

Who knows?  It's anybody's guess.

I think I remember reading about Axl laughing about "It's Five O'Clock Sowewhere".  He was saying that it was supposed to be the next GNR album.  He was pretty derisive about it.  Anyone have that article?

I don't want to go fishing for the article, but Slash had given Axl some tapes of what he had been working on and Axl said "I don't want GNR to go in that direction."  Later on, Axl called Slash back and said "Yeah, bring those tapes back over, I'm digging it" but Slash had already put them to use on Snakepit.
