Alice In Chains "Black" and "Blue" Video Q&A

October 21, 2009

"We had our hearts broken by losing Layne and losing ourselves" Alice In Chains' guitarist Jerry Cantrell says of the band's long road back from the death of singer Layne Staley in 2002.  The heartbreak led the band to eventually recruit new singer William DuVall and record new album "Black Gives Way To Blue," which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 this month and which spawned a title track that went all the way to No. 1 on the Rock Songs chart. The heart-centric album cover, Cantrell explains in a video interview with Billboard.com, is no coincidence.

In the interview, Cantrell, DuVall, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney talk about band life after Layne, collaborating with Elton John on the new album, and fan reception to DuVall.

"It took a lot to get through this process and to even take the chance, and stand-up and risk," Cantrell says.

"I think initially people came [with] arms crossed, sort of hoping against hope. I hear  that a lot," DuVall says. "I'm not trying to do a Layne. One of the things I loved about him was how individual he was. He was just being himself, so that's what I do."

Video below: The Billboard.com interview with Alice In Chains, presented in HD.

Jerry Cantrell: All Secrets Known

Mon 26 Oct 2009

Alice in Chains? lead guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell reclines in The Skinny?s interrogation chair to spill the facts you never knew you needed.

The last gig I went to as a punter?

?was Pearl Jam in Los Angeles last week. I watched the whole show ? took William [DuVall], he?d never seen them before. I was in the audience for the first half, but I got to go up and stand at the side of the stage and watch. So I?m watching the second encore and they do Hunger Strike, [Chris] Cornell was there - actually the whole of Soundgarden was there, Kim [Thayil], Ben [Shepherd] - and Matt [Cameron] of course was playing with Pearl Jam. So Chris got up and Temple of the Dog were together for a minute. They closed the show with Alive and I?m just sitting there having a good time when [Mike] McCready rolls over to me when it gets to the end solo, throws me his guitar and says ?Solo in E!? I?m like ?What?? ?Just solo in E, dude!? So I got to go out there and rock out with them too. We all did a bow together, fuckin? Pearl Jam, Cornell and me. It was a cool moment, a really nice thing. I went from punter to performer pretty quick.

If I could recruit one dream player to appear on the next Alice in Chains album it would be...

...Cornell. I?ve always wanted to do something with him again. We did Right Turn with Chris and Mark Arm and it was special, but maybe you can?t go home on that.

Here is a recent interview with Jerry Cantrell and William DuVall with Maximum Metal.

Jerry says in the video regarding William DuVall "The band before wasn't about one guy, it never was -- it wasn't about one f*cking dude then, and it ain't about one dude now.  It's easy to go for the f*cking headline and get him in some sort of unfair competition with f*cking Layne and that's just not the f*cking case man."  smoking

This from Amanda Fields of Project Runway regarding the new AIC video for "Your Decision"...

A little bit of an update from me...
I just shot a music video today for the song "Your Decision" by Alice in Chains! It was so much fun and I felt like I was dreaming - the location was so surreal! It was this giant house between Santa Monica and Malibu off of the Pacific Coast Highway. You look out the window and see the beautiful blue Pacific! The band members, Jerry, Sean, Mike and William, were fun to work with and the director had such an incredible vision. The stylist, a friend of mine, Cory Savage, really knows how to make a rock video couture! The band members all wore crisp expertly tailored suits and the string quartet wore flowing white dresses with black lace blindfolds!! My wig was made out of feathers!
