sorry to start a new thread, but i was looking through the countless threads that had "sailing" in it, but none of them said who the original artist was. is it the rolling stones?

The "Sailing" I'm familiar with is by Christopher Cross. It's a #1 song from 1980.

Are you talking about "I'm sailing away"? Or come sail away? Which I think is the rock band Chicago and they make fun of it on South Park. Or actually maybe it is Styx, probably is Styx cause the singer sounds the same.

Maybe you should have just tried "sailing lyrics" on google. No problem though, Rod Stewart is great.

Originally it was a song from the Sutherland Brothers & Quiver from the record called "Lifeboat" in 1972.
But it was no success.

"Sail away sweet sister, sail across the sea...maybe you'll find somebody, who'll love you half as much as me,
My heart is always with you, no matter what you do,
So sail away sweet sister, 'cause I'll always be in love with you..."

leave me alone, I had to do it.

Here's what I've got

I am sailing
I am sailing
home again across the sea.
I am sailing stormy waters
to be near you to be free.
I am flying
I am flying like a bird across the sky
I am flying passing high clouds to be with you to be free.

Can you hear me
can you hear me through the dark night far away.
I am dying forever trying to be with you who can say.
Can you hear me
can you hear me through the dark night far away.
I am dying forever trying to be with you who can say.

We are sailing
we are sailing home again across the sea.
VVe are sailing stormy waters to be near you to be free.

Oh Lord to be near you to be free
Oh Lord to be near you to be free . . .

GN'R covering a bunch of "proper English songs" in London in 2006.

Sway (the Rolling Stones), Sailing (Rod Stewart), Back In The USSR (The Beatles)

Very cool selection. Cheesy

Really?  You've got to check that one out.  Axl sounds amazing on it.  The other 2 covers were good too, but "Sailing" is fantastic.  I never heard of the song until GNR covered it but they certainly did a great job with it.

Love that cover too... Hope that Gn'R release it, at least the live version that we have in great quality as a b-side or a Bonus Track of futures albums or re-editions...
