Talking about bass guitars, this is a bit Off Topic, but, Duff has a very particular sound on his bass. What is it? Is it a chorus effect, phaser, flanger...? Oh, by the way, I'm talking about the UYI era. I would say it's a chorus, but I'm not sure. Does anybody know?
Thanks a lot!

Duff uses a pick ... sometimes, but not all the time, he uses chorus ... and quite often nowadays he has a bit of distortion on, to fatten the sound.

But Duff's distinct sound comes a lot from his using a pick to pluck the strings ...

I would just get a bass that "you" are comfortable with and learn with that.
Duff used a chorus pedal in the old days and the same effects processor as Slash in his live rig.
There is a distortion channel in The Gallien Krueger 2001-RB amp that he uses. Although he says that he splits his signal into a Marshall(don't know the amp model) and a 1X12 or 2x12 cabinet.

duff was a full time pick bassist (yellow tortex's)
He used a chorus a little
The bass was a Fender J-bass special (1985 or 86)
His had a oval shaped neck that he fell in love with so he had it CAD scanned and reproduced on his black bass
Galien-Krueger 800RB and 1x15 and and other cabinets
Nowadays he uses and MXR 10 band and a Zvex (or somting like that) wooly mammoth bass distortion

ps i have a washburn active bass and peavey 35 watt amp for sale for 250 US.

The legendary guitarist said that he does have some contact with Guns n' Roses singer Axl Rose, however.

"I've actually sent him Christmas cards, just to be cordial, but he never returns anything."

Well, here's what I got.

Duff doesn't tour with the 800RB anymore.
Now he uses the 2001RB with a 4x12 Gallien Krueger Neo cabinet

I've been looking for a cheap bass for a while now, and I can't really decide between Yamaha RBX-170, Kramer Striker 422S (=MusicYo-Kramer, not original) and ESP-ltd B50..

Ummm.. really don't know. So anyone got any experience of these pieces?

i started out on a yamaha RBX-300 and it served me well, however my friend has the one you named in there, its a great bass to start out, its got a bit of a punchy sound to it, best for slap bass if anything!!!
