It was genuine. I have listened to The Blues thousands of times and no live version has that softer quality during the "dooo" part, it's very clearly a studio cut.
He friggin' called Geffen the next day to prove to the doubters that he wasn't lying, and they basically confirmed his story. They said someone from MTV was there and that music is often played from the balcony for previews.
Plus, he didn't disappear - he just uses MyGNR more often.
