Free speech?

« on: November 17, 2006, 04:22:08 PM »

Hello Gang,

This is my first post.  I've been reading this site fairly regularly since the beginning though.  Don't know if that makes me a newbie...

I wanted to explore the concept of Guns N' Roses releasing Chinese Democracy in an alternative format.  I invite people to speculate on methods of what this might be.

The GNR website still says the following:

"As for Guns N' Roses forthcoming "Chinese Democracy" album the only comment at this time is that there are 13 Tuesdays left between now and the end of the year."

Nowhere does this imply that it is a CD.

Axl has made reference to "you downloading f**kers" during concerts.

Isn't Microsoft releasing some new music player?  What if Axl is planning an entirely different format?

I doubt it. Not everyone will download it or knows how too or has a computer. It will be a disk. And to back that up on the Trunk show he said it would be one disk. I'm sure it will be on ITunes tho..

It'll be a CD. In a case. One of the new style cases that Universal have been using lately, with the rounded edges if you know what I'm talking about.
And that's that.
I can't see us getting anything extra or special at all, but it would be good.

If ChinDem is anythng like UYI, most people will want to buy the compact disc for artwork and other stuff, regardless of availability on the internet. I think the smartest thing to do would be to bring a literal meaning to the term "Jewel Case" and put something in there that can't be downloaded... like a concert dvd or something.

I doubt it, but yeah it's a thought. I remember Slash mentioning that (briefly) about VR's first album, that they were considering it. I think their record company was against it though. Who knows, alot's changed since then.

But again, I highly doubt it.

I think an electronic release (or pre-release) is either the only or the easiest way to pull of a surprise release, and maybe a decent way to reduce piracy.

It can be on iTunes for a couple weeks, then on disc later.

After all, plenty of people went online to buy pre-sale tickets for the concerts.

Who knows... I bet it is possible to do a surprise release on disc, too.

I want to get into to vinyl. Best sound quality! ?But the way I take care of CDs, my vinyl collection would not last very long. I think I may start with vinyl if CD is released in the format.

It would be kick ass if it was a DualDisc. Some kind of special about the making of Chinese Democracy on the DVD... or music videos... or a concert... something!!

Yes I do remember Axl mentioning one disk now that I think about it. ?Very good point.

Would it make sense to release the album on-line and then follow up with a real CD?

No I don't think Axl will be making his own music format, but he could be partnering up with another institution that is looking to launch something new. ?I am not sure what the status of the new Microsoft product is.

I bet there are a lot of people who would like to get the word out about true Chinese Democracy in spite of Mr. Rose. ?Bono, ?Bill Gates?

Anyway, it's just a thought. ?Does anyone truly believe that, if Axl knows as of this moment that he will not be able to release the CD this year, that quote would still be on the GNR site?

While you were gone, Apple released iTunes and have since sold millions of downloaded tracks Wink

At the end of the day it doesn't matter.  It would be utter stupidity to effectively tell those that only have CD players "You're not allowed to buy Chi Dem".

But it's VERY possible that they could release it on iTunes (or some other online store) a day/week/month before the physical CD release.

"you may just walk into the store one day and find it on the shelf"

i think it will be released as a CD as music stores dont generally have Vinyls on their shelves, or music thats been downloaded. but yeah a DVD would be cool.

With a corresponding betamax tape of some 2006 concert footage of course! peace

I am pretty sure I did read somewhere that CD will be released on vinyl though.  I think Mysteron posted this some time ago.  No idea if that still stands though.
