Does this look infected?

« on: November 17, 2006, 02:43:14 PM »

Ok I went to Sam Goody today (record store chain in California, I'm not sure if it's national or not) - anyway, I got some somewhat good news, no release date or anything but I consider good news to be anything that isn't bad news at this point.

This is pretty much what the convo went like with the guy working there.

Me:  Do you guys have a release date for the Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy?

Him: Let me check, it's on and off, but we just got a new list today.

Me: What does on and off mean?

Him: That CD just randomly appears sometimes on our lists and then is gone on the next one. *checks some book* nope.

Me: How soon in advance would you need to know about it coming out if it was going to come out this year?

Him: We wouldn't really need to know ahead of time. There's no specific time table.

Me: So it's possible that it could just pop up one day and you have to sell it?

Him: We've been told to be ready for something like that. We're told that occasionally with rap albums but it never happens. If it was anyone but Axl Rose and Guns N' Roses I'd say no, but its something I've heard.

There was a line growing behind me so I left. Like I said, nothing earth shattering, but I think it does kill the rumor that record stores have to know a certain time ahead of time for it to come out.  The guy flat out told me it doesn't have to appear on any release list and could just show up. If you live in So Cal, go to the Sam Goody at the Galleria mall and ask the long haired dude.

Him: We've been told to be ready

We've also been told that. We need to trust, and wait some more weeks. I'm entertained with the current bootlegs, I can wait a little more. peace

I agree. I went through hell trying to confirm the same thing from other music employees because saying such a thing (ChinDem could pop up) seems to bring out the flaming scum.

That is pretty much what I also heard in some major german record stores....
Especially the "on and off" listing sounds really weird!

Sometimes a store keeps the name if it's successful and has been there for a while. If I'm correct, this person is talking about THE Galleria Mall... the mall in Terminator II. I'd imagine that record store will still be there when California "falls into the ocean" Smiley

Why do people need to tell long drawn out conversations with back and forth banter (me:....him:....me:......him...) when you can just get right to the point. Guess some people have a lot of timne on there hands drool

I never bought into record stores needing some type of "release date warning".? Same with DVD's and video games.? Sometimes they (merchants) have no idea whats coming in until the truck docks.

not that it matters but i talked to a woman today at hastings and she said  that it's uncommon but not out of the blue to get a batch of cd's from an artist to get put on the shelves the next day. she was aware of the current gnr saga and i was about the 10th call in the last two weeks asking the same questions. she said more than anything else it seems that there not wanting this record to leak (duh) but anyways my two cents and i'm out

I worked for Sam Goody in my college days...  They suck.  They had old GNR Greatest Hits listed one year and a half after it came out in new release book.  I wouldn't hold much stake in some store clerk at Sam Goody...

Encouraging news, thanks for sharing.

A Sam Goody went out of business at a local mall near me then reopened a month or so later retaining the name.

Our Sam Goody became FYE. Gotta love a place that sells cd's for 18.99. Sale price of 14.99
Go across the street to Best Buy and get same cd for 11.99. I don't see how they (sam goody) stay in business.
Sam Goody is also the place that took pre-orders for cd in 2002. i still have the slip somewhere. Has 12-3-2002 listed as the release date.

the reason why sam goody and fye  (owned by different companies by the way) have to charge more for cds is because unlike best buy (who owns their building) sam goody and fye have to pay rent on their space in the mall, which is very costly.

i worked for fye, i currently work for bestbuy (just in case anyone wonders why i constantly chime in with retail knowledge to help shed some light on things)
