VELVET REVOLVER is currently in pre-production for its long-awaited sophomore album with producer Brendan O'Brien. O'Brien has produced or mixed most of the major rock bands of the past 20 years, including PEARL JAM, SOUNDGARDEN, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and AUDIOSLAVE. "Things are moving quick now, and we are all very excited," drummer Matt Sorum said in an online posting. "Rome was not built in a day so I believe everyone will be very happy when [the new CD is] finished."

VELVET REVOLVER's sophomore album has a working title of "Libertad". The band's 2004 debut, "Contraband", was certified double-platinum for sales in excess of two million copies in the United States.

From Blabbermouth.

Who knows what happened with Rick, but Brendan at the album helm is a great move, he's produced some really great rock albums. ok

This should also silence those questioning what's going on with VR lately - they're working on the album so be patient!

hmm maybe they got tired of waiting on Rubin? Huh , or maybe they're just doing pre-production with o'brien.
I sure hope it's only pre-production with O'brien 'cause i really don't like the way he produces records, he turns almost everything into a pop record

Anyway here is matt's blog update:

Hello All,

I think they have a renewed sense of urgency....

Maybe they didn't want to "wait" and they know how they want the album to sound..  Rubin may still be a consultant at some point...

Rick Rubin seems to have a busy schedule-Metallica, U2-I wish he would still do it, but O'brien is a good choice, I think

Maybe theyre ready to record and don't want to wait for Rick. I guess Rubin's overused these days anyway, O'Brien should do a great job.

I like the fact that O'brien is working with VR over Rubin.  O'brien produced all of STPs stuff

I think Come On, Come In sounded like it was an outtake from Shangri-La Dee-Da (same structure, same guitar tones, same vocal inflections, same everything)... and with Scott and Brendan working together again, I can't help but feel the songs that get selected for the record will be the most STP-sounding.  Which doesn't necessarily mean bad songs... but most of the promotion for Contraband was, "we're not just the sum of our parts, we have our own sound", and if the new album sounds STP-ish, it'll just completely undermine that.  Come On, Come In is fine as a one-off they did quickly for the Fantastic Four soundtrack, but I'll be very disappointed if it proves to be a sign of the future.

Awesome, hate to think of these guys stuck in the Waiting Place it could be a train wreck. Do LOVE Rick Rubin though, maybe later of another time.

Happy birthday all you Scorpios, lots of action for you in the stars right now and Mercury is going direct?.

it will never sound like STP without the Deleo brothers. Brendan is only producing the songs not writing them. The Deleos wrote 90% of STP's music. VR sounds like STP at times because Scott is the singer. Its going to sound like VR plain and simple. Hopefully a more evolved sound which happens with any band thats been together for a while

Rubin's overrated anyway, he's like the 90s Glen Ballard, everyone wants him as much for the name as they want his producing skills.

Hope the album is out soon.

I  havent decided what to think about this albums production situation.  I liked the idea of having multiple producers and was indifferent to Rick Rubins participation.  I like O'Brien though.  His work on the STP and Pearl Jam albums was great, and giving VR a similar sound certainly wont hurt.

Some people elsewhere were saying that sometimes O'Brien does pre-production work for Rubin, so who really knows at this point. Either way, they are both a major step up as producers compared to the guy who did Contraband.

Hopefully we'll get the album in spring.

Brendan O'Brien should be a good choice.
