I heard on CNN the REPUBLICANS had more to do with him resigning than the democrats. Which is an interesting school of thought. Apparently, they said, the Repubs were soo upset they lost soo many of the close races and majority in the House & Senate, that they are the one's who ended up calling for his resignation.

He is too much of a liability to them now.

Indirectly, I think they're right.

The fact is, the dems were going to force him out.? And, for the Repubs, which reflects better on the party?? His resignation or him getting booted to the curb, more or less, through dem pressure.  And NOBODY on the Repub side of the aisle wants Rummy answering the tough questions in front of a dem controlled legislature.  That would disastrous for them.

Yeah but todays resignation kinda doesn't jive with Bush saying only a week ago (even less?) that Rummy would be the Sec of Def through the rest of his term no matter what.  For him to say that with EVERYONE predicting a Democratic house on November 8th is just really odd.  Its a dramatic reversal.

Hallelujah.......all I can say is finally.  Robert Gates isn't that great of choice either.  He's just another Bush family crony who's had a history of shadiness with the Iran-Contra scandal.

There has been inside pressure (and most recently exterior) on bush to get rid of Rumsfeld for sometime now. After last night, he does not have a choice. The days of "with us or against us" is over. He has to at least appear to be making changes (this is just as much on 08 move as anything else) away from his stubborn ways.

Also, now that the Dems are in power the investigations will be under way, Rummy is a huge liability for them. Adios.

yeah they need to move forward on that.  Not too long ago, there were a lot of news stories about Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation of Rove/Rummy/Niger and yellowcake, but then people moved on to Foley and other scandals.

The first part was funny..

As for the second, they already announced it, a Robert Gates, former head of CIA from 91-93 (Under Bush's dad). Most recently head of Texas A&M university (Hmmmmm Texas anyone?!).? Not sure how that qualifies him but I suppose the first part does a little bit. I'll give him a fair shot with a wait & see attitude before I judge. Hopefully he's better in press conferences than Rumsfeld & Tony Snow.? I think mostly he was involved somewhat in the first Gulf War, so they're looking to draw upon his input from that experience.
