It was a very early version of gunsnroses.com that was active for a week or so. You couldn't access it by just typing gunsnroses.com though. If I remember right, you had to type www.gunsnroses.com/home.html or something. The main page had a picture of the AFD band from the SCOM video with everyone but Axl was blocked out.

The chinese themed page had a a layout similar to China's flag (red with yellow stars and text) and a section to enter a passcode/password.

No, but I do remember the old CD site (unofficial) with the photo of Axl morphing into Mao and back again... that was awesome.

As a student of history - two different levels of evil, really.

And you really had to see it.

That wasn't gunsnroses.com I don't think... wasn't that  GnRonline?

EDIT: It was gunsnroses.com.. I just checked my link to it on my old website and have this pic for it:

http://www.angelfire.com/rant/democracy/gnrbanner.jpg

That was taken from the site after the chinese menu theme.

Yeah, loved the scroll menu.  It was great looking site.

Here's gnronline from 2000: http://web.archive.org/web/20000619172429/http://www.gnronline.com/

They even had a "fan forum," though I think they disabled it pretty quickly.

Too bad archive.org doesn't have gunsnrsoes.com archived.
