I am gonna be using the laptop mainly for Recording My music
So can someone tell me which is the better Laptop?
I am pretty illiterate when it comes to shit like this so any advice is greatly appreciated.
I originally ordered the 2nd one and then got to looking and realized I may have fucked up.

The first one all the way (XPS M1210). It's got the latest features and more importantly the capacity to upgrade later as u please. The second one is more of a business laptop.

must be a short christmas card list
only joking.
To me the first one looks alot better for recording and as Genesis said the second would be mainly for business use.

Dells have been getting some bad reviews......
Im thinkin of just spending 12 more bucks a month and getting an Apple Mac which seems to be most recommended to use with Pro Tools anyway.

Sounds like a match made in heaven with your music then
Tell the truth about your Christmas card list. You take the cards you got last year, just scratch out the names, and write in the proper names for what you need.

You can. Macs tends to run Pro Tools better, but contrary to popular opinion, they usually don't run it as well (ie - you can process less with LE on a Mac at the same speed as PC). The other downside of a Mac, is that you have to download updates for Pro Tools every time there is a new OS X release, and you pretty much have to wait until Digidesign releases the update for Pro Tools, which can take time. So, while everybody else is out running the latest Mac OS X, you *have* to wait until Digidesign releases the Pro Tools update.

Macs are overpriced for what you get.
I hate Apple's arrogrant, condescending, and misleading commercials. I hate the whole "we know what you want better than you do" attitude of the company. I hate the fact they force beta versions of firmware onto customers. I hate the "I'm better than you because I'm different" attitude of so many Mac users I knew in college. I hate the fact their kernel was built on open source, then they went closed on it. And besides, pretty much anything a Mac can do, a PC can do better for less money and a year or two earlier than a Mac.
And I love having a mouse that can actually right click.
Go with the first one you listed.

If you're still in the market for a laptop while making the switch to MAC, then this should be more than enough for what you are looking to do:
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=1074003
The only downside is it's MUCH more expensive than a comprable "PC" laptop.

mac's definitely piss all over pc's when it comes to recording music.
if you use pro-tools you're going to need some sort of interface, the m-boxes are pretty decent.
you could also look at Logic if you're going to be using drum machines/midi. pro-tools is pretty lame when it comes to midi. Reason's also good for midi, they have better orchestral sounds than Logic. Though you can use Reason as a slave to both pro-tools and Logic so..

Logic is cooler software all the way around, even for recording, but it doesn't have the same industry support. Macs are not "head n shoulders" better than PCs for recording (at least with Pro Tools); I worked in a studio with G5 macs and Digi 002s, and they were slow as shit compared to my two year old PC (both 1 gig of ram). On the other hand, if you wanna go with Logic, you gotta go Mac.
Reason is the shit, I use it with Pro Tools, that's my favorite setup. W/ a PC, cause it's cheaper and faster, and I don't have to worry about OS X updates screwing up my ability to use it.

I just find PC's clunky and windows a bit of a clunky OS in general. From my experience mac's seem to be easier in terms of recording.. and just as fast, having used the same two things you listed.
But obviously a Protools HD setup would be nicer..

Well, Windows XP is clunkier for the GUI, but in terms of Pro Tools, the interface is 100% exactly the same. (unless it changed with Pro Tools 7, I haven't tried 7 yet). With a PC, it takes a bit longer to get setup and installed (particularly if you're gonna be doing MIDI directly in Pro Tools), but it actually runs a bit faster, and in my experience, it's easier to maintain. The only real advantage for going with a Mac for pro tools is the plugin support is better for a mac (for HD, for LE, not really) and then the OS itself is nicer of course.
Like I said though, the interface for Pro Tools is the exact same (minus the MIDI setup) whether you use a PC or a Mac, and it'll run faster on a PC for a lot less than a Mac, and you don't have to worry about the OS X updates screwing Pro Tools. For a low cost solution, a PC with a Mbox is the way to go. If you're doing Pro Tools HD, the extra cost of a Mac is definitely worth it.
