The recent soundboard  recordings really put  this song  in perspective. It  is so heavy, so great. The rhthym  guitar reminds me of My Michelle. I too love this song, and hope to hear  it live if  fuckin GNR would come to my town!!

Great song. And a great place to discuss it.

Anyone else with a random thought?

There is a search button at the top of the forum.

I think we need a workshop to teach some users how to use it.

whatever man.  There has been so many negative vibes on this site recently, and when a fan expresses his enjoyment for a tune there has to be some jerk off with something to say.

Hahahaha.

The Inland invasion sound board version is the best Ive heard this song aside from actually being at the Joint in Sept. Vocally he does a great job, pulls off every line like it was the studio and even digs down to get that gutteral, primal sound out of his throte on the line "gonna wave it right down in your face" which is just awsome.  This is my favorite new Guns song. yes peace

i do think that the guitar sound of the demo is shitty and the song has no dynamic; but the live version (e.g. rock am ring) is alright... but i also prefer chinese democracy and better (from the "rockers")...

The only thing that's cheesy is the actual hook ("Gonna get the IRS..." etc.). The lyrics for the rest of the song are pretty impressive.

Through all the motions: the love and the sex
That's the truth, here's the worst yet
Wouldn't be the amount of the things that I say
You made your mind up and gone on your way

I like that bit.

I like that bit.

I always thought it was.

Through all the motions a lover can make
That's the truth, and here's what we'll say
Woudn't even matter to me anyway
You've made your mind up and gone anyway

 Grin

I agree, those parts are pretty ok, but the chorus is horrible, and it gets repeated over and over again. Lord, give me strength.

Another thing, that guitar you hear in the left speaker at the beginning of the song fucking rocks. Some spaced shit going on there. I only hear it with headphones though.

The lyrics are pretty poor, but its a pretty good song. I wish they would put a proper bad-ass effect on the guitars to make it sound even more hard-metal.

"What shall I do, if I, gave my heart to you"

What relevance does that have to the IRS exactly?

I was never sure exactly what he was saying, but after comparing the monitor mix and Rock am Ring and Inland Invasion certain parts become very clear. (Especially Download Festival.) It's definitely what I posted, I'm almost positive. If I'm wrong I shall slap myself raw on the face.  Undecided

And yeah, the guitar in the beginning is awesome. I love the Led Zeppelin vibe there - it's like Led Zep with a modern twist. The crunchy guitar riffs are cool too. It needs work, though, because the demo sounds a bit flat at times - the live version is much better.

It's not actually about the IRS. It's about breaking up. (Another love song.) That's why I think the main chorus is so stupid. It's basically a guy expressing his insecurities - he's going to get the FBI and private eye to follow her around and try to validate his suspicions. It would be cool if he left out the IRS, because that would mean he's mad at her for buying too much and not writing off her taxes properly?  Huh

contra:
the problem with irs is that the song is way too repetitive, as some of you have metioned... especially because the song is pretty long as well and the hookline seems to get on ones nerves pretty soon (does it?).
pro:
what i think is cool about the live versions is that the poor guitar effects (from the demo) are gone and a funky wah-wah phrase has been added; all in all it sounds more organic now and has more of a dynamic character (just listen to the vocals at rock am ring); especially the guitar parts during the verses are pretty powerfull; i like that a lot; the new finck solo is also a huge plus;

conclusio:
irs is ok, but doesn't seem t o be a big gun (hopefully); nevertheless - with a cool production - it but may fit in perfectly in the "flow" of the chinese democracy album.
