When all I've got is precious time

« Reply #420 on: June 05, 2006, 03:06:27 PM »

IRS

Oh, oh ( I used to think its love but after hearing the 99 demo and the live versions its not)
Is it true?
What they say of you

Gonna call the President
Gonna call up the Private Eye
Gonna get the IRS
Gonna need the FBI

There?s not anymore that I can do
All the reasons that you gave
I'd follow you
To when you need and if that?d be the end of time it?s true

Wouldn?t be the first time I've been wrong
Wouldn't be the last I should have known
All the rumors I can tell
Some things didn't work so well

Well anyway, it feels the same

When you first told me you were gone
So long ago, but I've been here long
To all the motions (not sure about this part)
That's the truth and here's the worst yet
Wouldn't even matter the things I say
You made your mind up and gone anyway
There's no use now in dragging it on
Could've seen it coming all along

Well it?s true...ooh...I had
My doubts with you

Gonna call the President
Gonna call myself a Private Eye
Gonna need the IRS
Gonna get the FBI

Gonna make this a federal case
Gonna wave it right down in your face (??)
Read a minute with your morning news
With a cheap hangover, and the headlines true now

[Finck Solo]

I feel your doing this all for my health
I should've looked again then at somebody else
Feel like I done way more than wrong
Feelin like I?m livin inside of this song
Feelin like I'm just too tired to care
Feelin like I done more than my share
Could it be the way that I've carried on (yeah that does make more senes but weight did too)
Like a broken record for so long

And I do
Ooh, oh.
I'm Gonna call the President,
I'm gonna call a private eye
Gonna get the IRS,
Gonna need myself the FBI

Ooh, what shall I do
If I gave my heart to you
It's such a crime you know it?s true

[Bucket solo]

Gonna call the president
Gonna get myself a private eye
Gonna need the IRS
Gonna get the FBI

Gonna make it a federal case
Gonna wave it right down in your face(??)
Read a minute with your morning news
With a cheap hangover, and the headlines true

There's not anymore that I can do

I think this song will make a "stairway to heaven" of the 21st century.

Christ, I hope that you really dont mean that.

Me too.

Ooops I should have known that not everyone apperciates "stairway to heaven".  Tongue
True the zep sound is pretty dated but it's a monumental piece in Rock.
With all antiquated factors in it, the music is still beautiful, IMO.

Stairway to Heaven is fantastic, a true classic. I thought you were saying that IRS had the potential to be the same.

Thats why i thought you were mad mate. It couldnt even come remotely close to Zep even at their worst.

At their worst? Do you know what their worst is? Roll Eyes

I say it again.
Providing it has been proceeded along the lines of the demo leaked in march,
IRS will be a modern day "stairway".  The song will represent the pinnacle of hard rock.
I don't know how my posts can be taken otherwise.

I thought you meant stairway was not that good, which would be understandable as the song sounds pass?, sometimes too gaudy and too self intoxicated unlike IRS. None of zep member names it as their best work. Still it's a beautiful piece none the less. A monument of hard rock in the last century.

I'd say someone who HOPES this song won't be huge still calling themselves a GNR fan is very very mad.

IRS

Great job man!? There must still be some errors but these lyrics are getting close.

For what it is worth (the not sure part), this is the way I have heard it since the first few times I tried figuring out the lyrics.? "Through all the emotions and love that it takes"

BTW, does anyone know if Axl has been singing the end "There's not anymore that I can do" in that different key like RIR at all the concerts?? I'm starting to like the way he ends the song in that key better than the demos.

you have fairly high hopes for this song there  hihi

although I find Stairway a little lame these days, youre right in that it is an almost unparalled rock classic that perhaps only Bohemiam Rhapsody and SCOM can rival.

IRS in that league? mmm... sorry, I dont rate it quite that highly up the totem pole. We shall see how the public receive it if its released as a single I guess. To truly gauge its impact though, we would need to have this discussion 15 -20 yrs after its release

After sifting through all these various demo versions, live versions, hearing it live myself, etc., I've come up with this very, very loose interpretation. A lot of what I hear doesn't really make a ton of sense, oh well:

'Love, oh oh,
is it true?
What they say of you?

Gonna call the President,
gonna call with the private eye,
gonna get the IRS,
gonna need the FBI,
there's not anymore that I can do,

all the reasons that you gave,
I'd follow you,
to when you plead and if that'd be the end of time it's true,
wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong,
wouldn't be the last I'm sure I've gone
through all the rumors I can tell,
some things didn't work so well,

well anyway it feels the same,
as when you first told me you were gone,
so long ago but I still held on,
through all the motions and I'm in this debt,
and that's the truth now here's the worse yet,
wouldn't even matter, the things that I say,
you bend your mind I'll be gone anyway,
and there's no use knowing that you're done off,
you'd have seen if comin' all along.

well it's true, oh.
I had, but that was you, oh oh.

gonna call the President,
gonna call myself a private eye,
gonn need the IRS,
gonna get the FBI.

Gonna make this a federal case,
gonna wave it right back out in your face,
read about it with your morning news
with a sweet hangover and the headlines, too now.

I see you think I'm doin' this all for my health,
I should've looked again then at somebody else,
feelin' like I've done way more than wrong,
feelin' like I'm living inside of this song,
feelin' like I'm just too tired to care,
feelin' like I've done more than my share,
could it be the way that I've carried on,
like a broke record for so long?
Am I doomed?

Gonna call the President,
gonna call a private eye,
gonna get the IRS,
gonna need myself the FBI.

Oh, what shall I do?
If I gave my heart freely,
it's like a crime you know it's true!

Gonna call the President,
gonna get myself a private eye,
ooh gonna need the IRS,
gonna get the IRS.

Gonna make it a federal case,
gonna wave it right back out in your face,
re-invent it with your morning news with
a sweet hangover and your headlines, too
It's not anymore that I can do...'

« Reply #430 on: June 08, 2006, 03:20:09 AM »

Okay, so I never liked IRS... it was my least favorite of all the new songs (yes, even OMG and Silkworms!)...
But then I finally got around to downloading an mp3 of IRS from the Rock in Rio Lisbon Portugal show, and my opinion has changed dramatically.  If you haven't listened to it yet, I highly recommend that you find it.  First of all, Axl's vocals are really low in the mix, but that's good, because you can really hear the instruments.  Tommy's bass is easy to pick out for a change, which is great.  One of the keyboard players is really loud in the mix.  I think its Chris, and what he is playing reminds me of Rammstein, its more of a keyboard effect that really has a dark emotional undercurrent.  There is a really nice acoustic guitar about halfway through, and then during the last few choruses, the keyboard and rhythm guitar are playing the same notes and it sounds very sinister and creepy.  The music really matches the mood of the song... this guy is teetering on the edge of sanity really.  He's beyond sad, and into revenge territory maybe.  The music really impressed me and brought a whole new appreciation to the song.  I really, REALLY hope the band continues to push the song in a darker direction musically for the album.

ITs when you need and if that  be

This makes the most sense to me:

There?s not anymore that I can do
All the reasons that you gave
I'd follow you
To where you lead and if that?d be the end of time it?s true

So... yeah.  He'd follow the person even if he is led to the end of time. ok

Am i the only one with the IRS feaver?

its weird cos at first i thought i liked the otehr leaks more and that IRS was a little repititious....but then i started listening to the words and the way its sung and now i have to hear it many times each day....

Yeah cos by that time anyone will have known the impact/greatness of this song  like they do now with Stairway  based on popular appreciation.

That's why I'm predicting NOW. Cheesy

If you slow the song down 25 % you can make out most of the lyrics, by doing that this is what i got.

IRS

Oh, oh
Is it true?
What they say of you

Gonna call the President
Gonna call up the Private Eye
Gonna get the IRS
Gonna need the FBI

There?s not anymore that I can do
All the reasons that you gave
I'd follow you
To when you plead and if that?d be the end of time it?s true

Wouldn?t be the first time I've been wrong
Wouldn't be the last should have known
All the rumors I can tell
Some things didn't work so well

Well anyway, it feels the same

When you first told me you were gone
So long ago, but I've been here long
To all the emotions and love that it takes(?)
That's the truth and here's the worst yet
Wouldn't even matter the things I say
You made your mind up and gone anyway
There's no use now in dragging it on
Could've seen it coming all along

Well it?s true...ooh...I had
My doubts with you

Gonna call the President
Gonna call myself a Private Eye
Gonna need the IRS
Gonna get the FBI

Gonna make this a federal case
Gonna wave it right down in your face
Read a minute with your morning news
With a sweet hangover, and the headlines true now

[Finck Solo]

Feel like I done way more than wrong
Feelin like I?m livin inside of this song
Feelin like I'm just too tired to care
Feelin like I done more than my share
Could it be the weight that I've carried on
Like a broken record for so long

And I do
Ooh, oh.
I'm Gonna call the President,
I'm gonna call a private eye

Ooh, what shall I do
If I gave my heart to you
It's such a crime you know it?s true

I always thought so too.  It sounds like "So long ago, but I've still held on, through all the bullshit that I've had to take"
