I'm sure there is probably a thread for this, but since theres so many Vs threads, why not one about the best two bands of the last 2 decades.

I pick NIN, I love GNR but too me it's 3 great studio albums vs 4 great studio albums.

I really don't like NIN at all to be honest.

I did like their last album and the song they did with Bowie, but I can't stand Downward Spiral.

So, Guns for me.  ok

I love NIN (their my second favorite band), but Guns N' Roses are a superior band.

GnR have more great songs, imo, than NIN does. Also, AFD is one of the greatest albums of all time.

With_Teeth was good, especially the song 'Only'  "There is no fuckin you, there is only me."  great chorus

GNR, with NIN close behind

I really don't like Downward Spiral either. In fact I despise it. It's ugly, loud, annoying.

With Teeth is much better; sounds more like a band and not the one-man Trent Reznor "I'm real depressed and lonely" show. The lyrics were still pessimistic and introspective but more mature and with more accessible hooks; "The Hand That Feeds" is a great song.

Hmmm...

It's really hard. Both bands started out terrifically with their first couple of records (AFD and Lies / PHM and The Downward Spiral), but in the pursuit of something grander both bands stumbled badly (UYI vs. The Fragile).

I'll give it to GNR for the one-two punch of AFD and Lies, but having said that, neither of those records quite matches the perfection that is The Downward Spiral.

Both are great bands.  Both have had Robin Finck in them.  Grin

GNR has the edge in my personal opinion but that all comes down to personal taste...  I consider both to be in an elite category of the best bands of the last 20 years.

What's the point in comparing two totally different bands  Huh

NIN is its own thing, it's not metal, I don't know what it is.  Avant garde you could say.  GN'R is a rock band, with many traditional rock/musical sensibilities.

You're saying they're "over rated" when you've listened to PHM and "20 mins" of TDS?

You seem like a guy who listens an album, if it doesn't have the "AFD-first-listen-hit-run", then you decide it's shit. I undestand not everyone has to like NIN(or any other band), but that doesnt entitle to say they're "over rated".

I guess I have to post somthing before this becomes, a NIN bashing thread.

Pretty Hate Machine
The Downward Spiral
The Fragile
With Teeth

Without NIN there would be no real Industrial Scene, and maybe no hope for the next GNR album.

I can't choose between the two.  They're my two favourite bands of all time... to me Hurt and Estranged, Welcome To The Jungle and Head Like A Hole will always be equal.

Um, I love NIN, and it has nothing to whether Axl likes them or not. Believe it or not, people do listen to other music regardless of whether it's on Axl Rose's ipod... Roll Eyes

Anyway, as for the topic, GN'R and NIN have two very different styles. GN'R are classic rock while NIN are modern industrial rock. You can definitely see simliarities as others have said. Both started out much more straight-ahead in their approach (AFD and PHM) and then expanded their sound (UYI and The Fragile). To me The Fragile is a similar epic masterpiece for NIN the same way the UYI is for GN'R.
If you don't appreciate how great The Fragile is, give a it a few more listens, because it's definitely underrated. Same with The Downward Spiral.

I'd probably pick GN'R over NIN out of the two, but wouldn't necessarily say they're better. Just different.

 hihi

There's some truth to that.

But to be honest I'm surprised how many fans of GN'R love NIN. I know everyone's favorite MyGNR mod Madison is a huge Trent Reznor groupie. There must be some link between the two groups (in general - not Robin Finck) that I don't "get" because I think GN'R is the great rock n' roll band of our time and NIN is an entirely different band that makes a lot of experimental industrial noise - most of which I don't like.

But as I said before WITH TEETH was a pleasant surprise - IMO it's by far their strongest album; which is funny because most NIN fans said it was Trent selling out, etc.

GN'R, of course.

NIN's Downward is a classic, one of the best albums ever recorded, but GN'R has at least two classics, AFD and UYI I, while Lies and UYI II are great albums. NIN's Pretty Hate Machine is mediocre with 2 or 3 great songs, Fragile is good, but With Teeth is pure shit, unfortunately. And one other factor: classic GN'R were one of the best live acts ever, but NIN's live performances are not even close to that.
