Ugh, I hate listening to Robert Plant try to sing high on In Through the Out Door. I'm glad he mostly sticks to his normal old man voice on everything after that album.
Anyway, I always thought that Robert could go higher than Axl until I heard 2001 and beyond, especially the end of TWAT.

i opened for robert plant last year and i was pretty blown away by his vocal range. i think he may be in better shape than Axl, not that Axl is in a bad shape, but robert is pretty flawless live. and fuckin impressive. and overall the nicest person ever.

Can he go higher than Axl? Most likely not.
Is he a better vocalist than Axl? Most definately.

Do you mean in their primes or right now? In their primes, I'd say Plant could go higher ("The Ocean" is a perfect example). Right now, I'd say Axl's got a slight edge on him. But Plant is still a great, great singer especially at his age.

Plant has lost some of his high range from back in teh Zep days but his voice sounds fuller and has a nice gravel in it now. Actually, Dreamland might have some of the best vocals ever on it. I didn't used to like plants voice but his older voice has a much more ..... complex tone to it. He's also got great pitch and does a lot of subtle things.
Right now for rock music Plant may have the best voice going. If you don't pay close attention to the vocals you'll miss a lot of what he's doing on dreamland because it's so subtle. Axl can not touch plant on technique, note for note, Axl can hit higher notes at this point in time.

That's an informed opinion mcalldp. Does he sing in many different tones like axl does?
I'm not keen on solo acts in general that I wasn't attentive.
I must check "ocean" but I guess axl can go higher as well as lower.

I would say when both were in their prime Robert Plant could go higher than Axl. Listen to old Zepplin albums.

did he hit the top F#?
BTW, an excessive range doesn't mean a good singer.

He did, and LZ never tuned down 1/2 step. I think he actually might have a top A on the 1st Zeppelin album, although that's unconfirmed until I actually check it. He does not have the variety of timbres that Axl has, but that is because his register shifts are much more even. Btw, The Ocean is not a great example - he had lost some of his range by that time, and could not project in high register like he did on the 1st 4 albums - somewhat like Axl's transition between AFD and UYI, although he managed to hit some very high notes by lowering his intensity - similar to Axl's 2002 technique.
They are both great singers with freak of nature ranges, and a lot of power in their upper register. Plant basically pioneered the approach that has been used by Axl, Shannon Hoon, Chris Cornell, etc. so he deserves some credit for that, as well as managing to keep his voice in shape after recording and touring for this many years.

All I know is that their range is pretty close, and I think they are the two greatest hard rock singers of all time. Axl changes octaves to hit the high notes, not sure if plant has to do that or not. I am bias and prefer axl.

Not sure what you mean by changing octaves - maybe you mean registers? A high is a high C. If you change the octave, it's no longer high C; it's middle C.

However, lets not start comparing Zepplin to GN'R. That conversation can go nowhere but down.

you're right I don't care. ?Nor am I singing expert, so I don't know if going to a "falseto" type voice on the high notes is changing octaves or registers...please enlighten me on that subject.
