Matt Sorum says, "Rick Rubin IS Producing Our Record"

Matt sounds kind of amibtious doesn't he?
Velvet Revolver is looking to finish up writing the follow album to Contraband. The all-star outfit that features singer Scott Weiland and former members of Guns N' Roses, is hoping to beat Metallica to the studio to work with Rick Rubin.
Rubin is working with U2, but Velvet Revolver Matt Sorum said they'll be next in line.
"We're still writing, man. We just signed up with Rick Rubin. Rick Rubin is producing our record, which we're really excited about. But unfortunately he's producing U2 and Metallica right now, so we're waiting on him. He's in... Rick just went to France to do U2, and hopefully we're gonna beat Metallica to the studio because I think we write songs faster than they do. They're friends of mine so I'm allowed to say whatever I want about 'em."
Sorum, on hand at the Hard Rock Cafe 35th Anniversary Bash in New York City added that they're looking to make their Back In Black, the album that reaffirmed AC/DC's rock and roll dominance in the early '80s.
Watch video: Velvet Revolver Look To Make Back In Black With Rubin
"Rick just wants to hear the songs. Rick's about the songs. He doesn't really... He doesn't give a sh-t about getting into the studio until the songs are right. He said, 'Well, when I get back from U2 and I'm going to listen, and if you have the songs we'll go in.' There's no rush. We want to make a pinnacle rock record. We want to make (AC/DC's) Back In Black meets (Led Zeppelin's) Physical Graffiti. That's what we're looking to do."
Meanwhile, singer Scott Weiland played a solo show in Indiana, and he roadtested new solo tunes "Killing Me Sweetly" and "Beautiful Day."

Now that is ambitious, I hope they can pull it off. At least things finally seem to be moving, can't wait to hear the outcome.

I think you are reading too much into those older comments. The fact that they have Rick Rubin signed to come in with them now means they have to have some sort of vision for where this is going, because he does not have the time nor the inclanation to waste his time if they didn't.
I get more excited about this album as time passes. It seems that they realize the importance of making a kick-ass sophomore album, as there are expectations of them now that weren't there when Contraband was released. The fact they have secured Rick Rubin as a producer is nothing but a good sign for us getting a top notch album.

I hate to be a damper here but I think the reason everyone keeps contradicting each other is because it's kinda falling apart.
I mean, first we heard from Scott that it was all ready to go and it was going to be a concept album. Then Matt said it wasn't going to be a concept album but they would start recording soon. Then they said they
were
in the studio and that was apparently their reason for disproving rumors of Slash leaving VR. Then Slash and Matt said one of the songs (keyword ONE) they had recorded was going to be featured on the House soundtrack. The movie came out and there was no song. I wrote to Matt and he told me there were no plans to put it out any time soon.
So then we hear Pharrell is working on the album and it's going to be a dance album. Another delay, but okay, sounds cool. Now apparently they WEREN'T in studio and despite earlier claims that everything was ready to go, now they're waiting on a producer (who's working with another band) who has yet to actually approve their songs and they are
still writing?
Let's not forget Scott is starting to hype up a solo album and going on tour to support it, meaning he'll have a full schedule.
What the hell is going on?
I'm not rooting for VR to fail, I'd
love
to hear this album. But that's why I'm so disappointed right now.
It's hard to complain about how long they're taking since Axl has taken more than a decade, but the difference is VR claimed all of these things above despite claims that the band was breaking up. By comparison Audioslave has released THREE ALBUMS since their first album which was released the same year as VR.
As much as people criticize Axl for lofty ambitions, Matt claiming he wants to make a record like "Physical Graffiti" and "Back in Black" is kind of...well...the same. That's a broad statement to make.
Can't wait to hear this, I hope they fucking start soon and this band doesn't break apart, because I really feel like that's happening!
The official site is never updated, the forum hasn't been working for ages, I haven't heard anything from Duff for seemingly forever (did the guy die or what? Seriously! Where'd he go?).
Seems like Matt is the only one talking, and everything coming out of his mouth is kind of arrogant.

Alot of the stuff you keep refrencing with Pharrel and the dance beats and so on is all kind of old stuff. You haven't heard any of that kind of stuff since they played their shows together in July, so the band can't be falling aparat that badly. Getting in the studio together maybe changed everyone's vision from when they initially went in. You really think Rick Fuckin Rubin would sign on to go in with these guys when he could obviously take a pass if he wasn't interested? The guy is involved with U2 and Metallica now, and I can promise he wouldn't be wasting his time with VR if things were in the chaotic state that alot of people on this board wish it was.

That was my point. Maybe some people are too quick to jump on anything that mentions Axl.
I said it's hard to complain about how long this album is taking since there will always be the people who say, "Yeah, but Axl took MUCH longer."
If you think I'm trying to compare VR to Axl maybe you should re-read my post.

As far as I know VR released their album two years and three(?) months ago. Now they've been working on the new one for months and they'll be in the studio in some weeks. What's so scary? I'd be happier if they put out a kick ass album every year, but it's not the 60s anymore. 3 years between the albums isn't a big deal. Well, 4-5 years or even more isn't too good.

didnt duff say they were doing a dark side of the moon styled album :S
This gets more confusing by the days.
i just want them to get some form of new material out, just so i have something new to listen to by them, thats why i was excited bout the soundtrack song.
And wtf is scott doing with all this solo album crap, hes only done one album with VR and already hes off doing this....

He had been working on that before he started in VR I think. Frankly, I would rather him work on his solo album and get an outlet for the stuff than have the next VR album turn into a strictly Scott solo album. It has to help decrease band tensions when everyone can kind of do there stuff on their own, and then make a group project that is more inclusive. Telling everyone to forget about their individual tastes and only ever do group stuff is a quick way to get a band to break up.

If rick produced audioslave and half of their songs were actually released, VR is slated for punishment unless he can take them to a new level of performance for both parties.

Good point! I take it as a sign that there will be more space for Slash's amazing talent on the next record. However I'm a bit concerned if Scott has enough talent and inspiration to have ideas for two albums at the same time.

the potential is there.. there is a great set of musicians at hand. It's just a matter of some musical growth as a new band.. the last one seemed too emo/pop oriented in their target approach. Hopefully this one is just a rocker.

By 1996, Slash was gone; Izzy Stradlin was long gone. Duff McKagen officially quit in 1998. They were replaced by a shifting group of collaborators, who've helped Rose create music that plays to his old strengths while also playing catchup. ''Oh My God'' - the industrial flavored track that surfaced on the End of Days soundtrack - is only one hint of what's to come.
Imagine
Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti
remixed by Beck and Trent Reznor, and you'll have some sense of Axl's new sound.
Interesting! Two Physical Graffti's coming up!
