So are they hair metal like motley and poison, or heavy metal line GNR and the later Skid Row
Motley and poison, why? why oh why must every one pair these two bands together, poison and motley crue are nothing alike. and anyone who knows something about motley crue would tell you the same thing.
I think they sound very much the same.
Similar vocalists, same hair metal style, same genre, same era, same "bad boy" reputation.
If you're not a die-hard fan of the band(s) it's very easy to lump them together.
No not the same style, poison are a bunch of pussies, motley crue on the other hand are not. same image? no motley did one album that was over the top glam in 1985 that being theatre of pain and no one was doing that at the time then on the next album something totally differnt, motley never looked the same twice. posion had the same look on every album and that killed them. See its bands like poison that stupid fucks lump together with good bands who had hair in the 80's and gives them all a bad name. alot of good bands became jokes because of poison.
Dude, don't know what you're smoking, but last I checked Motley Crue proclaimed themselves to be hair metal in the 1980s and their albums from Shout At the Devil through Dr. Feelgood were all glam-style in terms of image. I own all their albums up through Feelgood (and a few others later on) and they have photos inside each album cover, I'm pretty sure a guy with huge fluffy sprayed hair and a pink scarf around his neck and white gloves wearing KISS-style glam clothing is considered glam. Sorry.
Motley Crue may have been more "dangerous" but that has nothing to do with their musical style. If you want to sit there and tell me "Girls Girls Girls" isn't musically similar to Poison songs and other genre bands like Twisted Sister then fine, but I kindly disagree.

think what you want man, but you don't understand motley crue if you lump them together with those bands. you may here girls girls girls and dr feelgood and hear the pop hits but that doesn't mean you understand the band. read the dirt man listen to the lyrics watch the video's by no means are motley crue like poison. the way you think is that any band who had hair spray and hair must be like poison and write sapy pop rock hits. poison was a joke and still is.

GN'R had a major image change in the early '90s and their sound heavily evolved. They became a rock band like the Stones and Queen rather than dying out with the hair metal scene.
Absolutely.

Can you not read?
I own most of the Crue's albums. The deepest lyrics they've done were on Motley Crue (1994) and that was without Neil, and you know what? That's their best album IMO. It was alternative and unique and sounded great. They should have stuck with that instead of doing stuff like Generation Swine.
Their lyrics on most songs are really nothing special.
And we weren't debating these elements - you said they ditched the Poison look and they clearly didn't. I'm pretty sure even the bandmembers themselves would agree that they were glam in image until glam died - they really ditched it when Corabi joined, and when Neil returned they started the whole "modern tough guy" look they have today.

heres' my 2 cents. As a fand of both Poison and Motley Crue I can honestly say that in my opinion they are nothing alike. When I think of Glam and hair metal Motley Crue is not what I think of. Poison on the other hand were the poster boys for this genre. Motley Crue is alot harder and alot more gritty than Posion in my opinion. As for the ballads well motley Crue's balalds alwasy fell flat in my opinion where as Posion had some really great ballads(Every Rose, Somthing to Belive in, Life Goes On etc.) Also I don't think Vince and Brett sound anything alike. Vince has a metal singing voice where as Brett has a bluesy rock voice. As the years have gone by Poison has become a sort of nostalgia act for me. I listen to their albums when I'm feeling that way. Motley Crue though simply still rock. Their albums are great even today without the hint of nostalgia. Or at the very least without a fraction of the nostalgia Posion albums hold.

Yeah, their vocalist was very typical for that era - sounds similar to Bach, Neil, and other genre singers. The guitars aren't bad but the guy's no Slash.
Far as I see it there are two types of people on this forum - those who like the Appetite GN'R because they are into other hair metal bands (like Skid Row) OR the people who enjoy the fact that GN'R was more of an early Aerosmith/Rolling Stones type band that evolved into a rock band in the league of Queen. I think some of the people who love the hair metal aspect of early GN'R tend to overlook the fact that the songs themselves blew all other hair metal out of the water - and Axl's vocals were in a completely other league compared to people like the guy from Faster Pussycat. Some fans really just do view GN'R as a cool hard rock/hair metal era band and they're usually the ones who dislike songs like November Rain.
I personally think GN'R are never given respect in that regard - they're often labeled sleaze rock or hair metal by critics today and Appetite is hailed as a masterpiece in that genre, but it was so much more than the standard hair metal album; IMHO it WASN'T a hair metal album, it was a hard rock album, and the sound evolved into a more mature whole later on. On the surface songs like It's So Easy and Rocket Queen seem to be nothing more than typical sexist hair metal stuff but those songs kick ass lyrically (the outro to Rocket Queen - man oh man!) and musically they're nothing like hair metal from that ime.

wiki says they had a new album this year
trust me, you dont want that....i mean, imagine a group taking every piece of music they had and just throwing it out and then deciding to become an Industrial band....no wait, not every member, just the lead vocalist. Now that i think of it, GNR and Faster Pussycat have more in common then i taught. another interesting coincidence, both FP's first drummer and GNR's first drummer were fired in 1990. Adler, you know, was fired for heroin abuse...FP's drummer was fired for trying to mail heroin to his hotel room...hardcore
