I was just listening to TWAT from the 14th again and noticed the beginning of the song has less of that hip-hop industrial sound and more of a rock n roll sound - you can hear the guitars more, the intro has the vocal chorus instead of the loop, etc. etc. It sounds better! Too bad the overall performance and vocals were pretty mess when they performed it live. I hope this is an indication that the finished version of the song will have more of a rock sound to it - I LOVE the last four minutes of the song, but the intro is kind of "meh" on the demo.

It's from the 12th.
And I agree, it does have sort of a more RNR vibe

A couple of us at the show had no idea what the hell they were playing at first. It was a pretty rough version through out but still sounded pretty damn cool. I was worried that Axl wasn't going to even attempt those really high pitched vocals at the end because he skipped the first couple lines. But when he did sing the last two lines and absolutely nailed the vocals, that was one of the most electric moments of all 4 nights for me.

I agree....not much of a fan of the leaked version (beginning). Just piano and vocals would be best but hey...not my record!

IMO it was the best song played that night. I love the live version.

When I first heard the leak, I was not that impressed. But after hearing the live version and listening to the leak a few more times, I have a new found respect for the song. It is one of my favorites. I hope they play it on the U.S. Tour.

This is kind of unrelated but - where do people find a hip-hop or industrial vibe in this song? Is this because of the way the drum track goes? I saw a journalist describe Madagascar as a hiphop song back in 2002 simply because it had a drum track and I nearly pissed myself laughing... I don't hear any hiphop in there, and industrial would be NIN or Manson or Ministry at the least and I don't hear that either...
really, it's just a good rock song period, I just want a cleaner version...

when i heard them begin to play TWAT, i went fucking nuts. TWAT is the best gnr song ever. best lyrics axl has ever written. im expecting the album version to have more orchestra in it, with maybe a longer outro, including music from an orchestra and/or piano. im guessing the album version is going to be a bit longer, maybe as long as estranged or november rain...

Yea but without the already long outro the song is only 2 verses. if it's going to be as long as estranged there needs to be more lyrics. the band jam the last 3 1/2 - 4 minutes is awesome though

yeah, but i still wouldnt mind hearing it longer, with some heavy orchestration and piano along with the guitars. i think thats whats gonna be on the finished version. my friend (who is also a member of this forum) talked to merck, and i believe he said there is going to be "something special" or a "suprise" on TWAT. cant wait!

I know what you mean it just rocks live, robins stage prescence especially owns. But i think the performance in new york was great, i thought it was like very very good, great live song in my opinion.

The guitar behind the "it was a long.." part sounds really heavy.
I haven't actually listened to live There Was A Time in ages, anyone got it avaliable?
EDIT: Found it. That newer intro is MUCH cooler!

I really hate the intro they added to the live version, but I agree that the rest of the song is much improved. In addition to the changes that showed up in the Hammerstein show, I like how they added the rhythm sections that kick in during the first guitar solo in the Madrid performance. It reminds me a lot of the heavy background to Slash's solo in Estranged at the part where he's coming out of the water in the video.

That part your referring to reminds me of a zeppelin lick. It was great live, I've got the 4 nights at hammerstein on dvd and it was defiantley the highlight ( except for the mic feedback ) and got the biggest crowd cheer of all the new tracks played. I wonder why axl pulled it during the euro tour?
