Even if they had stacks of shit in vaults, I just don't see GNR being the type of band to put out a box set like this.

matt was the last one to go. he was fired in 97.
I read a Sorum interview from 96/97 and he said that they have about 12 000 hours worth of recordings.
That just shows how full of SHIT Matt are?

Record companies release those costly and hugely over-priced box sets as tax write-offs. I don't think that any contemporary label owned by UMG is in a position to even consider doing something like that.
Maybe years down the road when GNR are no longer a going concern? When the rights to the recordings get kicked back to some warehousing label (like Columbia, or whatever the UMG equivalent is) then they'll trawl the vaults.

12,000 x 60 = 720,000 mins, an average song = 4 mins: 720,000 divided by 4 = 180,000
180,000 songs - I don't think so.

yea, 12000 seems waaaay to high to me, he probablly meant 1200
Not to mention, 12000 hours = 500 days (nonstop recording)

he probably meant 12,000 minutes of recording... That's much more probable, and makes a lot more sense.

I believe a prayer is all you'll have for the original band reuniting.

If even only for 4 songs I saw David Gilmore and Roger Waters on the same stage last year. If those 2 were able to put it aside there will be a day we see Axl and Slash on the same stage before we all die.

The "lost album" and all the other stuff from those days would be very interesting to hear, as will all the stuff recorded from '98-'06 that doesn't make it on CD or the next two. A huge boxset of studio goof-offs, demos, unfinished songs, unreleased finished tracks, etc. would be super cool for the harcore fans (of which there will be many more by the time CD and the subsequent albums have run their course), but I can't imagine it coming out for many, many years. I'm a sucker for that kinda shit. I love to hear the different stages of songs and the stuff the band just didn't think was good enough.
On the Warren Zevon tribute album from a few years back there was an unreleased song called "Studebaker" that his son sang. The song was fantastic, simply fantastic and I would love to one day hear Warren's version of it. My point is that artists may THINK such and such song is no good and toss it into the vaults never to see the light of day but such and such song really kicks ass. Axl's probably got a few gems locked away in the archives and I'd love to hear them one day. After the band unleashes CD and the subsequent albums, of course.

There should really be at least a B-sides and rarities album just for fans down the road. With
Oh My God
Silkworms
Ain't Goin' Down
Just Another Sunday
Shadow of your Love
Heartbreak Hotel
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Cornshucker
Bring it Back Home
Some of those tracks were written after 1997 and the others are Appetite/Lies/Illusion demos.
The question was can we look forward to seeing stuff from the forgotten years.
lol yeah I did read the question. The point was, we should get SOMETHING. It's not going to be the "lost album" because parts of it written by Slash/Duff belong to them really and that would be messy with the rights. What if a lick they did back then was later used in a VR song?
the only way it ever happens is if those guys wind up back in the band and even THEN it's doubtful.
So, I'd take a b-sides album of past and present. Part 1 - B-Sides past Part 2 - B-Sides present. just forget about the "lost" years. They were lost. Anything good Axl wrote then will be on CD (i.e. I'm expecting This I Love).

Ya, when you look at it that way, that seems impossible. 1200 hours I can see. Even that would be a ton of material.

No reunion will happen. Ever. Axl said so during Trunk's interview. I don't see him changing is mind.
Plus it wouldn't be right for the guys in the band.

He could be talking about total time for all the individual tracks (drums, bass, guitars, etc). If you assume that the tracks would have drums, at least three guitar tracks, bass, vocals (at least three tracks, probably) and then synths, keys, strings, horn sections...becomes a little more realistic - and then of course, many of them could be duplicates, ie. different takes of the same songs.

I have an old news report on video tape from MTV back in '96-97 (when slash left the band,) where kurt loader reads a letter written by axl. that says there is (about) 13 new tracks and (about) 8 b-sides to be released within a year. so for this to be even remotely true there must have been many tracks already started or somewhat complete.
I also read an magazine interview with duff, where the reporter asked about the unfinished songs from CD before he left. Duff said thoses songs weren't finished. and that he hopes that "contraband" would satisfy people becuse the CD album was never finished.

An anthology set of those sessions would be awesome. Yet, I do agree with some other posters that Axl, given his "perfectionist" nature, would never release them. But who knows? I wouldn't consider "The Spagetti Incident" a batch of perfectly recorded tracks, and that was released. So there may be hope in some of those songs being release one day...
