Lemmy will keep rocking, and not in a rocking chair

Posted: 02/10/2011

He's 65 years of age, has been the head of the band for 36 years, and he hears just fine. His band touts itself as the "loudest, coolest and most ironic rock 'n' roll lifestyle around," and its new album is called The World Is Yours. Motorhead's last album, Motorizer, broke all the group's sales records.

"The music is exactly what you'd expect. We're pretty much set in our ways," Kilmister says. "It's straight-ahead rock 'n' roll. It is not heavy metal. People call us a heavy-metal band. We are not heavy metal. We are heavy rock. We were rocking way before heavy metal, way before punk. It's what we've been doing for 36 years, and I've never tired of it.

"Well, you can get tired of any job, but I'd get tired of plumbing quicker than I will of playing rock 'n' roll."

Kilmister, the only original member of the band, has no intention of quitting.

"What I have got to go to?" he muses. "I have no grandchildren. I have no porch. Besides, rock 'n' roll needs me to keep it clean. A lot of people try to kill it. The boring stuff is here, like that boring hip-hop. It's an absence of music with the same beat year in and year out."

Mot?rhead icon Lemmy gets anger out of his system

Even more effusive are the fans outside a show who call Lemmy ?Jesus? and ?God.? On The World Is Y?urs, he sings, ?Rock ?n? roll music is the true religion,? but in conversation, he scoffs at the fans? comparison. ?Let?s not be silly about this, man! If you have to shave this mug every morning, you don?t think it?s God. God doesn?t have to shave.? He does allow, however, that as a religion, ?rock ?n? roll?s as good as any other. And it?s probably got more followers than most of them these days. Uh oh ? John Lennon!?

It?s somewhat curious, though, that the singer, one of the most recognizable and unique figures in rock ?n? roll, has never gone solo. ?Well for one thing,? he says, ?you would have to pay for everything ? ha-ha! And number two, the great thing about the camaraderie in the band ? it?s much more fun to be on the road within a band than it is to be on your own. Ask Ozzy Osbourne. He?s always trying to keep the band thing around him, but he?s still Ozzy, and the band aren?t.  I think he?d much rather be in a band.?

 August 15, 2011

Motorhead frontman Ian ?Lemmy? Kilmister has let slip that the metal legends are plotting a covers album but he jokes which bands they actually select to cover is already causing scraps in the band as drummer Mikkey Dee is keen for Lemmy to wrap his pipes around some songs Lemmy doesn?t feel he could pull off.

Speaking backstage at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany Lemmy said Dee is a fan of bands which sing in a higher key than Lemmy is used to. He said:

?We?re not sure but we are thinking about doing an album of covers. The problem is Mikkey likes bands like Journey and that and I can?t sing like that. So we?ll have to get him to compromise on that.?

When asked if there were any modern songs Lemmy would like to give the Motorhead treatment he added:

?There are a lot of songs I like but I wouldn?t cover them as they are by girls.

?Skunk Anansie and Evenesence write some great songs, really good quality songs. I could try it but it?d be a slightly lower key.?

Motorhead announced their next album, "Bad Magic," will be released later this month.  Here's a link: http://imotorhead.com/motorhead-news/motorhead-new-album-bad-magic-release-date

This is their 22nd studio album and the 40th anniversary of the band!  They have quite the discography.

When I first posted in this thread back in 2006, I had just discovered this band.  Nine years later and I'm still interested in Lemmy and the gang.  They are one of the few bands that continue to interest me year after year (along with GNR of course).  I've now seen them live twice now - once in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when they were on tour with Heaven and Hell (before Dio passed away), and once in a one-off special concert with Megadeth at the Palms Casino, Las Vegas. I even have an autographed drum head from Mikkey Dee from that concert!

In any event, I just thought I would post this news about this great band in case there are any other Motorhead fans lurking on the forum these days.  Cheers!   beer

From Mot?rheads facebook:

''
Official Mot?rhead

There is no easy way to say this?our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it?s way down the street, with his family.
We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren?t words.
We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please?play Mot?rhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy?s music LOUD.
Have a drink or few.
Share stories.
Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.
HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT.

I just saw the news. I?m shocked and very sad! Just a couple of weeks ago it was Lemmy?s birthday. And he celebrated with a party at The Roxy. I can?t believe this is happening

Saw the band three times - the last time at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, where they were headlining with Megadeth.  A really great show.  Really sad Lemmy passed away.  We lost Philthy Animal Taylor in November too.  Services for Lemmy will be held on Saturday and will be broadcast live online.  RIP Lemmy.
