There was no "typical punk band" when they helped create the genre.
Theyre popular because their musics good, they were cool and theyve influenced countless bands. Hopefully youll give them another shot and come around...if not, oh well.

I bought The Crysalis Years 3 CD boxset a while back, and I can't listen to it in one sitting. So many similar songs. That said some of my favourite songs were by them so they're great in small doses. Blitzkrieg Bop and Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World were warm up songs at my old band's jams for ages.

Because their shirts are sold at Hot Topic. Thanks to that, there are a whole bunch of brand new longtime fans
My favorite song is "Somebody Put Something In My Drink"

One reason is that the radio in USA didn't play their music.

I just watched 'The Story of The Ramones' DVD again yesterday, so I had to chime in.
They had their moments of greatness and their moments of shame, but they kept at it and they did it their way (albeit Johnny's way). I'm a fan of latter-era albums like Brain Drain and Mondo Bizarro, but the classic albums grandfathered entire musical genres like speed and thrash metal using the melodies of the 50's, so you have to give props.
And it's good, plain fun. How many bands are truly fun anymore?

"The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre."
From Allmusic.com and I couldn't agree more.
