Hmm.. I think The Blues in 2001 version is indeed very similar to CITR. I thought it was Brian May playing the outro solo in The Blues on that Boston promo sample, btw... I'm not so sure, but I think it sounds more like May than Richard.

But the thing is I guess he didn't wrote the structure with Axl, but rather just added his solos and rhythm guitar. Also, why would he write only soft and slow songs?

I got an email from Richard a few weeks ago... pretty cool guy.
Here it is:

From:   <4tus@richardfortusonline.com>

Subject:   RE: howdy

   HI Hunter,
sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your email.? Thanks for all of
your kind words.? I like the TC mulit-fx units.? I think they sound
great.? i'm more of a pedal junkie.? I usually buy boutique pedals that
are way over-priced.? They tend to have a bit more personality to me.
For guitar switching, i use a Custom Audio Bradshaw system.? I really
like the Rocktron and the Ground Control systems as well.? You should
also check out Cornford amps.? They are made in Britain and are the
best new amps i have come across in quite a while.? I'm currently using
them on this tour in Europe.? THey really kick ass.? Hope to see you
soon.? We'll be touring the states after we finish here in Europe.
Hopefully we'll begin doing dates in the states in Sept.
thanks for writing,
richard

Richard just replied to the mail I sent him back in December 2005. Here's his answer:

Hi Gerrit,
Thanks for taking the time to write to me.  I apologize for the very
long delay in replying to your email.  I have been trying to catch up
on my website email.  I hope that you have been able to see us on this
current European tour.  The shows have been going well.  Axl's voice is
better than ever.  Everyone is looking forward to the record finally
being released.  We are all very excited.  Thanks to you and to all of
the fans that haven't given up on us!
This is the year!

I just got a reply from my email sent to 4tus in november... I totally forgot I ever sent it!!

Hi Dan,
Thanks for taking the time to write to me.  I'd like to appologize for
the incredibly long delay in responding to your email.  I'm so
back-logged with emails.  so, as you probably know, we are currently on
tour in Europe. Hopefully you have seen the show at Hammersmith.
So... to answer a couple of your questions...
Paisley's now 7 months!  My girl thought of the name.

As for my heavy handed style of playing/beating the guitar.  I've never
seen anyone else do that, so i guess it's natural.  Not premeditated in
any way.

Obviously, Ronald (the new guy), is playing Buckethead's parts.  To
answer the question about IRS, yes, i can play that spot on.  Axl feels
that we need 3 guitarists though, since that is what's on the record.

THanks again for writing, and again my deepest appologies for not
replying sooner,
richard

Richard Fortus, the phenomenon

« Reply #527 on: July 04, 2006, 06:12:15 PM »

To be honnest, he is one of the most spectacular guitar player I've ever seen. In fact, he is the most spectacular one with Slash.
If Richard had joined the band in 1985 or 1988 or even 1991 after Izzy's departure, he would have become a Guitar-Hero. But now it's too late.

1) Because Slash left an impossible Inheritance to reach.
2) Because this stupid "3 guitar players thing" kills every possibility to get a new Star in this band besides Axl.

Makes me think he recorded some BH parts, like the solo for Madagascar.

I thought that at first too, but I think he meant Buckethead's parts are there, played by Ron.

He can still be a guitar hero even if not on the same level as Slash.

Richard is more versitle than slash is as a guitar player.

He would deserve it. He has the level. TOO BAD there are 3 guitar players, it just avoids people to pay 100% attention to him and it avoids him to be THE superstar guitar player of this band. With 3 guitar players, there are so many guys playing guitar parts that you can't concentrate on one guy. Anyway, once a new GNR videoclip will air on TV, all the teenagers will love Richard and his guitar playing. He just has a fucking kick-ass style, it's like his trademark now ?Cool

Richard is the coolest looking guitar player on stage. Robin also looks pretty cool in his Ted Theodore Logan pirate outfit. Bumble, I'll just keep my opinion to myself on him.

Robin just looks very cool with his horserider style and as for Ron, I like how down to earth his appearance and personality is.

Got a reallyt cool reply today too:

Hi Bruno,
Thanks for taking the time to write to me.  I appologize for the very
long delay in replying to your email.  I have been trying to catch up
on my website email.  I'm sorry that I can't answer most of your Gn'R
questions.  I really appreciate your support though and all of your
kind words.  We are planning to tour in Brazil.  Things are not
finalized, but they are being planned now.  The band is very excited
about the release of the record and the shows have been going really
well.  In response to your question about Robin.  I love playing with
Robin.  It's an honor and a privilege to play with him.  I think he is
one of the greatest guitarists there is and I feel a very real
connection with him as a musician and as a human.  There is no other
guitarist that i'd rather be in a band with.  This is going to be a
very big year for Gn'R.  I'm really excited for the world to hear
Chinese Democracy.
thanks for your support,
richard
