Soul Asylum is one of the best bands to come out of Minnesota (not counting .. Prince).  They are classic.  If Tommy wasn't in Gn'R, then Soul Asylum is the band I'd want him to be a part of.   ok

does anybody really care about Soul Asylum? Undecided

I do. I love them. I have all their albums even Times Incinerator(only available on cassette). You could easily call them a light rock band now or a folk rock band. They're stuff in the 80's was a bit more punk rock. They're an amazing live band and Dave's voice sounds as good now(probably better) than it did 15 years ago. he's not an amazing singer but there's something about his voice that I really like and I guess not being a great singer in the classical sense makes it easier for him to keep his voice as he ages. I'd like it if Tommy went with Soul Asylum permanently. It'd be a good fit. they're freinds and all from Minnesota.

I witnessed their rise from obscurity in the 90's on MTV...I had grave dancers union, IMO 'Somebody to Shove" was an awesome tune but by the time Runawaytrain rolled around and Black Gold or whatever and they got the guy from the TV show cheers on their video...I was like "alright I'm out, fuck these guys" I'm just surprised that they retain a fan base cuz i felt their music was (is) pretty boring and weak...but to each their own....I'm really surprised that GnR fans are such avid Soul Asylum fans... Shocked

I got into them around the time of "Grave Dancers Union" also. They have been a band that I can listen to their CD once or twice and than I have to put it away for awhile before I want to hear it again.

I'd say thats the one improvement on their new disc, I've actually had it in pretty heavy rotation on my car CD player.

Two new dates for Soul Asylum:

9/23 Utah State Fair Park Salt Lake City, UT
9/30 Harriet Island St. Paul, MN

Conflicting dates with GNR on the 23rd of September....Curious as to why Soul Asylum would schedule same date if Tommy is a full time member of this band which it appears he is.  Seems like Tommy has to make a choice but apparently no one on this board has any concerns about the whole Tommy/GNR/Soul Asylum issue...I won't be worried if no one else is....Nu GNR is no GNR without Tommy....IMHO

Yes Tommy is very important to GnR. Watch the beginning of the T.W.A.T. video from Hammerstein on the 12th for all you need to know on that.

No he is not the main Bass player for Soul Asylum. Tommy only plays on two songs on their new album. I forgot the other players name.

He is in the picture on the band's website and just played all of their August/September dates..If he was not in the band than why all of the press/tour appearances?  They also indicate that Tommy is the only bass player that the previous bass player (Karl) would have accepted if the band was to continue after his death...sounds like Tommy is pretty important to Soul Asylum..

Tommy would be important in any band. Check the credits on their latest CD. When Tommy has GnR dates he will be replaced in Soul Asylum. peace

I suppose Tommy probably doesn't like playing in a THREE guitar players band anymore. Maybe he prefers a more simple band, just more real. He has more fun!
I'm with Tommy on this one. I'm a fan but I'm already sick and tired of this THREE guitar players band. It musn't be enjoyable to play on a THREE guitar players band. You must feel like an Axl's servant, not as a recognized musician. Tommy is a musician. and he probably wants to be recognized, not be one of the EIGHT servants of Monseigneur Axl "Louis XIV" Rose.

He probably will find a way to do both, without anything interfering.

That is easy. Let SA open for gnr and he can do both shows? ok

I'd like to see that. Lot of work for Tommy though. Has that ever happened? Meaning 2 shows back to back at the same venue, different bands, but a common member?

Liquid Tension Experiment opened for Dream Theater for a while. The guitarist and the drummer played in both bands.

The Revolting Cocks open for Ministry all the time.? Al Jourgensen sings for both bands.
That show was fun this summer. ok

You don't want to see anything, you don't want to hear anything. Some of you are trully blind. You don't have to study in Harvard to see and feel Tommy doesn't feel confortable in GN'R anymore (especially since the Euro Tour started, but in fact it started before). It's been a while. Stay blind, don't hear anything, I prefer to see things as they are, positive and negative things.

The 3 guitar players time bomb and ego bandmates conflicts starts now. Now, believe what you want. That's in the air for a long time.

Just a last thing: IF Tommy left GN'R one day or another, don't blame him. He doesn't deserve to be blamed. He has been loyal for 8 years.

I'm one of the blind and deaf ones, I guess.  Where is this rumor - Tommy being unhappy - coming from?

This guy (nesquick) is so annoying he makes Gonnorhea look pleasant.  *lol*  Seriously you really have a huge psychological problem dude.  If you do not like How Axl and GNR do things then stop following them and go follow Slash.  That simple.  You are obviously not a fan of the new GNR so stop pesting us people who are.  Jesus Christ!

John Fields plays bass for Soul Asylum when Tommy is busy with GnR. This has been known for around 6 months now.

Tommy is perfectly happy in GnR at present.

That was my understanding as well...he certainly looked happy when I saw them at the Hammerstein in NYC.  But what do I know?
