This is for fans both of The Doors and GN'R, it's nothing big but this video reminded me of this thread>

Morrison as a lyricist was truely amazing. The Doors were poetry to music.? Not to mention the first dangerous rock star. Listen to what he was doing in the 60's. He is so emulated these past 35+ years.? Axl has some work to do to catch up.
However, dead rock stars seem to get the glory over the living ones.
I never liked the doors. I didn't see the magnetism of Morrison or the brilliance in his songwriting capabilities but hey, my opinion and opinions vary.
Axl... I don't even know. After the AFD tour he just lost a part of himself. When he's on, he's untouchable.

I don't think they have anything in common (that's what the thread's about, right?) at all but they are two out of my most favorite singers of all time.

Axl's a great frontman and a sometimes-brilliant / sometimes-ridiculous lyricist. Jim Morisson was a great, magnetic figure on stage and a true intellect. I like Axl and I think he's got potential but Jim... hey, I don't touch the legends.
One thing I think they have in common though is this: everybody lends a closer ear to their whisper. Take "Estranged" . Take "Cars hiss by my window".

Morrison didn't put out crap? Yes he did. But he didn't put out as much crap as Axl has (so much filler on UYI). That being said, the Doors' debut album isn't even in the same league with Appetite in my opinion. Not many albums are.
And Jim WAS a pioneer, but not of rock stars. Anyone remember the Beatles? They most certainly were rock stars, as was Elvis quite a number of years before Jim Morrison. But Morrison definitely pioneered the cliched rock star of the 1970s and 1980s (for better or worse). He was one of the first to wear the leather, etc. This ended up leading to the whole hair metal leotard stuff of the 1980s, but it's also a damn cool look if it's kept simple enough. Axl is probably the most over-the-top rock star ever based on his look from the UYI era. Wow, running around in underwear, biker shorts, etc. The crappy leotard and makeup garbage of the 80's was pretty ridiculous, and Axl's shunning of it helped slam the door on hair metal. But he took his own wardrobe to an excess we'll probably never see again (and don't try to say Slipknot, etc. is more excessive...BFD, they're wearing masks and trying to scare people).

I like gnr better and Axl's a better singer but the fact is that Jim has transcended being a rock star. He is a legend, a myth. He's bigger than life now and I don't think there's any comparison. At least not yet.

Jim was the blueprint for subsequent rock stars. Axl borrowd a lot from Jim & made it his own, so its almost like comparing apples to oranges.
Lim gets the nod because he was the original rock star bluepring & has taken on mythic ststus since dead rock stars usually do.
