ugh, westerns. I think I've seen one that I enjoyed.  The pre-cursor to 24, done in real-time, High Noon.  beer

I'm with Jim, I don't see a need to do it by decade.  I'm happy to compare Cassablanca to Moulin Rouge, etc..  I don't think decade really matters.

Jim and Danny actually make a really good point. Great films are timeless.  No reason to date them.

well i agree but it gets hard to narrow it down...how many nominations do we allow? and how many form each genre to vote off? if the list gets too big it's just hard to digest all the movies there.

I figured on doing something similiar to what i did in the albums one where i take the top 3 or 4 for each decade and mix them together and do a survivor based on that...

and someone suggested 21st century, 90's, 80's and then everything prior to the 80's..not so sure we shouldn't throw a 70's in there too for us oldtimers hihi

but that would mean 16 - 20 movies from each genre as an elimination thread that is lots and that way we don't forget any movies that we may have if we say just nominated  like our 20 favorite movies.

thats just my thoughts anyway....it worked for albums...in the top five we ended up with a 90's disk 2 80's disks a 60's disk and a 70's disk and that was widdled down from a list of 15 albums but like i said we'll do what the majority wants

However we do it, it may be best to be divisible down to 2. I think 16 per genre is best, then narrow it down to 8, then 4, then 2 then the 'Greatest"

Hold on a second. ....

I was just thinking,

why bother crushing all these genres together just so that we can do it by decade (a futile persuit in my humble opinion). Why don't we just do a round for every genre listed in that post, by that poster, on the last page!

Obviously not Talk Show, Short, Reality-TV or Game-Show, but INCLUDING Documentary! (I don't understand why that one was in red................)

It stilll needs some triming. For example I don't get why News is there, why there is a music and musical round (surely anything "music" will fall under biography or documentary), and I still think that there should be a round for foreign film.

I think that it would be a lot more fun, not to mention easier, to do it that way than by some mashed up genre definitions done by decade. How many Westerns are we going to see appear otherwise, if they're classed as 'action.'

So...

Yeah.

movies like walk the line are considered music genre and citizen kane is considered in the news genre.

Also we are doing greatest movie ever...do movies like "Super-size Me" or "the Outlaw Jose Wales" me will actually compete for the top prize? while documentaries are interesting i just dunno if they would even get a small percentage of the vote...

I mean i can go with nominations for each genre but most movies are mashed into 4 or 5 categories anyway so it's impossible to determine...ok I'm gonna start a new thread and we'll talk about genres and decades ok

Im glad to see this thread is evolving..

I like the different genres.

Does everyone see what Im tryin to say on Casablanca, Citizen Kane etc..HuhHuh?

If u have saw those films and honest to GOD think they are the greatest, by all means vote away.

But I have a feeling that a whole lot of people probably have never even watched these flicks, but since they've always heard they are the greatest will vote for them just so they dont feel like a retard for voting Rocky over one of those.

People get peer pressure even on message forums.

On that album survivor, the fact that LED Zeppelin had 4 albums in it was a fuckin joke.

I hear ya DTM but there is no way to know if people actually like or have seen the movies or not unfortuantely...also zep tops charts everywhere so they must be alright hihi peace

AC/DC and Metallica were the surprises IMO...i mean Floyd and Hendrix didn't crak the top 5 so that has to say something, doesn't it Undecided

If you're getting this rubbish from IMDB, then I think if you read what you're saying you can see it's short commings. Citizen Kane as 'News' because, why?... Charles Foster Kane's job! Or maybe because of how the film opens?

As far as Walk the Line goes, it's a Biographical film through and through.

For the record, Rocky won Best Picture, Citizen Kane didn't.  Grin

Well it's actually listed as a Drama but it has news as a sub genre

And biographical is also listed in walk the line but it's main genre is Drama as well. music is just a sub-genre

can you honestly say that some of your favorite movies are Documentaries? I'm not really following what you are trying to get at here. Undecided

I studied a module on documentary film last year. Maybe that's it. I wasn't looking at it with a view to a winner, I just thought it would be interesting.

definately it would interesting to see it unfold to see peoples interests but documentaries are so specialized that it's really impossible to label a greatest documentary ever...and no offense but does anybody really want to? nervous

Gone with the Wind, Clerks, True Romance, Terminator 2, Back to the Future, Godfather 1&2, Rocky, and a bunch of others I'm drawing blanks on Grin

Jim,
If it makes you feel better, when the proper category comes up, Seven Samurai is getting a nomination from me ok

I also dont think breaking it down by decades is necessary in this matter.

Woo! That's me, you and the Whatever Man for sure. I'd trust Danny to throw a vote in as well.

That's at least four of us, which should get it in, and then everybody watches it, we have a winner!
