Yeah, maybe, just a suggestion to make the process easier that's why i grouped a few together, and i thought there are a hell of a lot of films which are both sci-fi and horror yes

Off Topic: Let me say congrats!!  beer

On Topic: As for decades, since most of us (including myself on this one  peace) do not remember many movies enough of the 50's, 60's etc (and someone brought up a good point about NOT voting for Casablance just because it's Casablanca), how about we do decade's as:

Pre 1980's (1930-1979)
1980's
1990's
2000's

I say Pre-1980's as the 70's and everything prior. I think a few good movie's came out in the 60's, but not enough to build a whole decade for). Also, we'll use IMDB for movies Official release date. Sound good?

might work i dunno the average ages of people who will be voting in this...I imagine? though, that like the albums, the farther we go back the less nominations we will get

Action
Adventure
Animation
Biography
Comedy
Crime
Documentary
Drama
Family
Fantasy
Film-Noir
Game-Show
History
Horror
Music
Musical
Mystery
News
Reality-TV
Romance
Sci-Fi
Short
Sport
Talk-Show
Thriller
War
Western? ?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say maybe we should disregard the red genres...please gimme your input on this. Click on this link and then you can browse the top movies of each genre to give you an idea

http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Genres/

Also we gotta narrow it down to 4 or so major genres then whatever is the first major genre on IMDB is what the Genre will be:

eg:
Alien (1979), Directed by: Ridley Scott, Genre: Sci-Fi / Horror / Thriller
&
Aliens (1986), Directed by: James Cameron, Genre: Action / Horror / Sci-Fi / Thriller

I think the major genres should be Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror and generally be broken down like this:

Action (includes Adventure; Animation; Family; Fantasy; Sci-Fi; Sport; War; Western)

Comedy (stands alone)

Drama (includes Biography, Crime; Film-Noir; History; Music; Musical; Mystery; News; Romance)

Horror (includes Thriller)

now in the case of Alien (1st one) it says Sci-fi first...but the first Major Genre is Horror so that overrides it, where as Alien contains Action and Horror but is considered an Action flick because IMDB has that listed first. Movies like The Usual Suspects (which is listed as a Crime/Mystery/Thriller) is considered a Drama because, even though it has no major genre listed, Crime falls under the major genre of Drama.

Just my opinon feel free to add your thoughts and ideas beer

i think that the sci-fi should be a stand alone genre, i can't see putting star wars and lethal weapon together in the same genre. but that's just an opinion.

and i said to neemo in the other thread that we should have a 3-4 days voting period not like the 2 days like the albums finals. so we can get a chance to view a movie if we don't know it.

i dunno...there are sci fi movies of all walks...and in it's most basic form starwars is still only an action movie (IMDB categorizes it as Action/Adventure/Fantasy/Sci-Fi) so by my format I proposed above it still qualifies as a action movie Wink . but if we do genres we gotta set some ground rules down or some movies are elegible for all 4 of the main categories i suggested

IMO Sci-Fi a sub-category and also doing a top ten of 4 genres and 4 different decades for each genre...that will take a while... but like in the album survivor, the game is as much mine as it is yours, if it's not fun people won't vote...so I'll go with a majority vote ok

This may look crazy at first, but I think at some point it'd be cool to mix it up a bit, kinda like the Sweet 16 in NCAA. To boost some life back into the voting, we begin mixing up genre and competing them against each other (Action vs Horror, Drama vs Comedy). This will be done once the voting is complete for best movie of each decade per genre.? It may help liven it up, as opposed to repeatedly voting Best Comedy.. Best Comedy.. Best Comedy.. etc.

1990's vs 1980?------------Winner?

Then match up Best COmedy vs another genre, like drama or action etc.. as a Final Four.

Fuck sake. I just wrote out a huge post about why we should have a Film Not in the English Language round, that wasn't decade specific, in order to save the likes of Akira Kurosawa, Goddard, Polanski, Miyazaki and bla, and bla, and bla (... I actually made a list!) from being smothered by fools talking American. That way at least one of them makes it into the final, because I'm willing to guess that none of them would otherwise. But now that schmango's all lost because my browser crashed!

Bollocks to it.

I think we should give animation it's own section.  There's such a wide range of animated films out there that it doesn't just belong in 'action'.

yeah i wasn't sure on how to classify animation or family....but normally they are action oriented (most of the ones I've seen anyway) and you can't really group family with animation cuz not all animated shows are family oriented...seriously though is there enough great movies to warrant a  who separate survivor for them?

the most likely animated movies to be nominated are pixar and disney flicks which tend to be action/adventure type movies. Akira is action, Animatrix is action....i dunno...again everybody post your thoughts on this idea too

if anything action and adventure should be considered one and the same for the purposes of this survivor

Perfect Blue (thriller)
Dead Leaves (action)
Princess Mononoke (fantasy)
Spirited Away (fantasy/family)
Ghost in the Shell (Sci-Fi)
Toy Story (comedy)
Watership Down (umm...rabbit film?)
Fantasia (no, seriously!)
The Lion King (don't deny it!)
Aladdin (Adventure)
Akira (Sci-fi)

That's just off the top of my head.  It's just my opinion but I reakon there's more than enough for it to have it's own section.  If they're not good enough they'll get killed off in the knockout rounds.

Speaking of foreign-language films...throw my vote in for Alexander Nevsky.  Great movie.  How amazing is it that just 6 years after this movie is made, Germany attacks Russia.  If you didn't know, or haven't seen the movie, it's set about 700 years earlier and German Teutonic knights attack the Russians.   peace

Great idea, but how will you pick the films going into this Survivor? There are so many films to choose from, and so many different opinions. Example: I think Apocalypse Now is one of the greatest films ever made, but most people here probably haven't seen it, and it wont make the list.

fight club, fargo, gone with the wind, godfather 1+2, serpico, goodfellas, tombstone, pulp fiction, reservoir dogs, the deer hunter, citizen kane, casablanca,  dr. strangelove, doctor zhivago, clockwork orange,  a place in the sun, silence of the lambs, the wild bunch, easy rider, days of wine and roses, terminator 2, white heat, cool hand luke.

I'd throw these into the mix.

Hold on a second. ....

I was just thinking,

why bother crushing all these genres together just so that we can do it by decade (a futile persuit in my humble opinion). Why don't we just do a round for every genre listed in that post, by that poster, on the last page!

Obviously not Talk Show, Short, Reality-TV or Game-Show, but INCLUDING Documentary! (I don't understand why that one was in red................)

It stilll needs some triming. For example I don't get why News is there, why there is a music and musical round (surely anything "music" will fall under biography or documentary), and I still think that there should be a round for foreign film.

I think that it would be a lot more fun, not to mention easier, to do it that way than by some mashed up genre definitions done by decade. How many Westerns are we going to see appear otherwise, if they're classed as 'action.'

So...

Yeah.
