Here Today...

« on: July 02, 2006, 03:31:37 PM »

I was just watching a bunch of old shows I had the other day and everyone of them has Estranged being played live. I just wanted some other people's oppinions and to find out if there was ever a time when Estranged was played live and GN'R did a bad preformance of it. I have never seen one but I always hear that it is such a hard song to play live, my thing is that they always seemed to play it perfectly and it seems like a waste to not play such a great song because its challenging to do, especially when it was succesfully dont so many times. I know they may be hesitant now to play it with the new line up but I never understood why it was always such a big deal to play it live, especially since it has been done, and done well.

May be Axl has some other reason why not to play this. Emotionally difficult or something.... I don't know but I don't think it's too hard for the new band to play. I think they should play Civil War that's such an awesome song and would be perfect cos of what's going on in the world.

I've seen a version (may have been Tokyo) where slash misses a bend in the build up to the second solo - but could the old band ever play anything badly?Huhok

Didn't the Making the videos PT IV, have an interview with Slash on there where he says they went out and played it and I think it was Gilby who missed a few chords then everyone else got messed up off that, but they pulled it back together.

When has there ever been a time when the song would not fit in with what was going on in the world?

The concerts this tour have been slowed down enough with all of the solos, adding another drawn out 10 minute song would put the crowd to sleep. After watching that You Tube video the only way I would ever want to see that played live would be if they took Finck's guitar away for the song, because watching him screw it up would ruin the Holy Grail of GNR songs.

It can't be any worse than hearing him destroy November Rain...

I think Estranged is far too Slash influenced for the new band to play. The song just seems like its Axl and Slash's baby.

I think Estranged is far too Slash influenced for the new band to play. The song just seems like its Axl and Slash's baby.

And Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O Mine aren't too Slash influenced? I doubt that's the reason.

The old band usually played Estranged well. Thing is the guitar tone never sounded right live. It doesn't have the same epic feel to it. Plus it's one of those songs it looks as if the band is just going through the motions when playing it live. It's hard to put a different spin on it or something, kinda hard to explain what I mean but anyway I'd still
love to hear it live. Plus it has a big long instrumental interlude in the middle so Axl can go for a break much better than hearing another Finck solo!

Having said that Axl wants to put on a rock show and obviously feels the Blues, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, November Rain, Patience and Madagascar are enough ballads and there is therefore no need for Don't Cry or Estranged. I understand this but would like to see KOHD and Patience dropped for Don't Cry and Estranged. Not gonna happen, so not much point in discussing it I suppose.

I always thought Estranged was a better studio song.  The vocal effects and the layering of the instruments is difficult to replicate live.  This is a song that's heavily produced, so playing it live and making it sound like it does on the album is almost impossible.  Estranged was never a great song live, it's too long and melancholy.  It's one of the greatest songs ever to me, but it's so long and moody that it's kind of a momentum killer if played live, you can only have so many long ballads at one show, and I think NR is a much better live song than Estranged

you asked if they ever messed it up....i think it was one of the shows at the forum where they started the song and axl  made them start it over again and then he sung 2 lines then walked off stage and ended the show...................and rock n rio 91 (1st time ever played it) axl's voice was destroyed and he could barely get thru it............

 hihi ok

Didn't someone have a boot of the practice sessions for the HOB 2001 show where they played Estranged and Civil War? I remember them saying Axl didn't sound too good on CW. I can't remember what they said about Estranged.

I think that the new band can play this song... but even if they don't I would be happy to hear it only by Dizzy and Axl... Dizzy was the man that played this song during the illusions tour and AXL said that he doesn t even? know to play this song (on piano) anymore (during the making of estranged video). It s an amazing song and an accoustic version only with Dizzy on keyboards it s welcome from me? Smiley
