GNR in Philly? * UPDATE *
«
on:
June 23, 2006, 05:56:49 PM »
Did anyone listen to 93.3 wmmr in philly this afternoon?
I caught the tail end of a conversation between Peirre Robert and Matt Cord and Pierre was talking about protesting outside the electric factory when they play there.
what was this conversation all about?
are they rumoured to play at the electric factory this fall? that is a small venue, only a little larger than the hammerstein, so this would be awesome news.
i know matt cord is friends with tommy, so i could see him getting access to a little insider info, but i dont know how this whole conversation played out, so i dont know if he was announcing something, or what.
again, anybody hear this?

My apologies, but did the DJ say they as in "they"? Or did they explicably say "GNR"?

I didnt hear the conversation so I can only guess what happened. My guess is that Pierre was saying that GNR if they toured in the Fall/winter would only be able to sellout a small theater like Electric factory. I would imagine Pierre would say that if GNR would not play a free concert (which someone else posted about ) or at least apologize for the no-show in Philly then he plans to protest. This is only a guess and I am sure Pierre has nothing but love for Axl( See prior Pierre-related posts for sarcasm). I doubt GNR has told any venues about tour plans for America yet.

The Electric Factory is a small venue. GNR will not play there when they start the Fall tour.

Im a student at Drexel in philly, and although I know a lot of Philladelphians, and ppl from nearby in jersey, et cetera are still rightfully angry about the GNR no-show in 02, I think there are enough die hard fans to sell out a major venue. I hope GNR will come to philly, and will make things right...

Looks like i thought right the first time and GNR are planning to return to philly. Matt Cord mentioned on the radio this morning that Axl was in jail and said that he hopes that any antic axl might pull in europe do not effect the fall dates GNR has reserved in philly.

Not if there isn't a CD...no CD, stick to Electric Factory venue...I'm not paying Wachovia prices to hear a setlist from 2002 (give or take 1 or 2 leaks)...if that's the case, I'll just watch the old videos...

last time i played wachovia prices they were not that much different from electric factory prices.
CD or not, i think EF is a safer bet. this town hates axl.
besides, after the hammerstein, i dont think i could ever enjoy an arena guns show.

Excuse me for asking this, but why would you be rightfully angry without knowing the reason why the gig was cancelled?
If Clear Channel screwed with Axl's contract and tried to embarrass him by not canceling the show after Axl told them he was not going to make it, would that be an excuse enough for you?
The silence on this issue indicates that axl and cc are fighting something in court.

actually, prices were higher than your typical EF show. floor seats were $65, and many second level seats were $50. EF are usually in the $25-$40 range.
i would PREFER the EF, but i think the spectrum or the tweeter are much more likely. people are pissed, but there's plenty of fans that will go see them even without an album.
remember, the riot was a complete sell out well in advance of the show. the FU Center holds over 15,000 for concerts (closer to 20K i believe). the EF only holds about 3,000 (not to mention the stage is tiny).

Excuse ME, but I don't care WHY the show got canceled - Axl's fault, Clear Channel's fault, whatever! - I'm still angry that it happened & that I drove to Philly & back that night for no good reason. Which is not to say that I won't drive down again if they schedule a date there this fall...

the answer to that question is actually very simple. (by the way, you're make 2 HUGE assumptions here, but i'll play along).
even if your assumption is true, why do you think it ok to USE YOUR FANS as a bargaining chip. i think that is the lowest, slimiest thing a musician can do. he should have showed up and played and worked out the details the day after. i hope, i really really hope, that isn't the reason.
OR even if cc isn't gonna annouce the cancellation (again, playing along with your assumptions that they wanted to embarress the person they are making millions from), why not just annouce it yourself???

Once again if you direct your anger at any one target, then you are assuming a cause for the cancellation. Having spoken to a couple of sources, I have been told that CC asked Axl to put a $1 million bond for each show: if there was a cancellation then he would forfeit the money. CC tried to embarrass Axl by ignoring him when he called out sick. How much of this is fact is uncertain.
I do know for a fact that the behavior of the crowd was an embarrassment.

From what I have heard, he didn't use them as a bargaining chip. CC tried to embarrass him by telling the venue that he was coming, until of course, he didnt.....
I think you put too much on Axl Rose here. Clear Channel were dangling a huge knife over his head; threatening to cancel the whole tour in fact if he didn't agree to a ridiculous demand. This is though what I have heard.

I'm with you. I drove to Philly for nothing too. I won't travel that far for them again. I'm sure that they have enough people that will though and ones that live closer.
