Slash: comes with a free mini Duff McKagan
GETTING THE SOUND
Slash is most often seen toting a Les Paul, but anything with humbucking pickups is fine. Using a POD MKII, we used the Black Panel setting for most of the clean guitars and the Rectified amp for the screaming lead tone.? This was enhanced with compression and a little delay.

verse 1:? It's useful to see these arpeggios as fragments of the five or size-note chords from which they're derived.? The C comes from an E shape barre chord at the 8th fret, the Em from an Am shape at the 7th fret and the G from a C shape, again with the barre at the 7th fret.

pre-chorus:? Staying with the clean sound, select the bridge pickup for this cutting tone.? The notes reflect the riff played on the acoustics, but an octave higher.

chorus:? It's imperative that these notes are separated and not allowed to bleed into each other, as this will result in a 'mush' with this level of gain.? After each note, allow your fretting finger to release the pressure but maintain contact with the string.? This mutes the note to avoid bleed.

verse 2:? If you don't have a volume pedal you will need to use your guitar's volume knob.? Turn the volume off then play the note well ahead of the beat so that your hand has time to return to the knob to smoothly swell the note in.

bridge:? These fills are a series of simple quick 'flicks' with your third finger, but they look a lot more complicated thanthey actually are.

solo:? Note that the solo actually starts in the last bar of the preceding bridge section.? There are frequent position shifts here that will require some experiments to find the most comfortable fingerings, especially for the climb up the neck in bar 8.

The legendary guitarist said that he does have some contact with Guns n' Roses singer Axl Rose, however.

"I've actually sent him Christmas cards, just to be cordial, but he never returns anything."
