Hearts in Atlantis

I've always loved this movie.

Easily one of Anythony Hopkins best films.

Really?  Because it was so different from the book, I was really let down when I watched it.  Not because of Hopkins because he did a fantastic job in the part (even exactly as I imagined the character when I read it) but that so much was left out of the film.

Isn't that always the way, though?  I'm hard-pressed to think of one movie that was entirely faithful to the book (Steve Martin's "Shopgirl," I suppose, but that was a novella, so it doesn't really count).   Recent films such as "Gone Baby Gone" and "No Country for Old Men" pale in comparison to the novels they were adapted from.  No matter how much critical acclaim these films received, they nonetheless seemed to be watered-down sketches of the characters and events that appeared in the books themselves.   The downside of reading a lot of books, I suppose.

I don't think there is any downside to reading a lot of books.  It's just a shame that adaptations usually fail miserably at really capturing the book in entirety.

This is why I am so terrified of what will happen when they try to put The Dark Tower to screen.

Agreed.  I was being a bit on the facetious side with the "downside to reading a lot of books" comment.  I can't imagine how they'll pull a "Watchmen" film off either, but I do have high hopes for Cormac McCarthy's "The Road."

I watched Death Proof the other day and that is now 2 hours of my life I will never get back.

I saw Grindhouse in theaters, when it was a double feature. Both movies are great. I preferred Death Proof, but I know most people think it's incredibly boring and isn't worth seeing except for the car chase scene at the end. If you hated Death Proof, chances are you'll probably like Planet Terror, because the two movies are total opposites. Planet Terror is full of guts and gore and explosions (plus an incredibly sexy Rose McGowan . . . say hello to your new fetish: AMPUTEES!!!). I'm a huge Tarantino fan (Pulp Fiction is the greatest movie of all time), but Death Proof is by far his weakest movie. I still enjoyed it, because I love hearing his dialogue ... plus I enjoy movies like Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, which is referenced several times in the movie . . . But I think only Tarantino-diehards will probably enjoy Death Proof.

I saw Planet Terror a while back and did enjoy it more.

I am usually a big fan of Tarantino movies but this movie was just awful in every way, even the dialogue (which is usually where his movies shine- a la Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs).

The dialogue goes on and on and then goes into action for 2 seconds.  Then more bad dialogue that goes on and on and then into the final chase.  It's just very disjointed and he is trying too hard to be campy.

The Strangers--- Just your typical, by-the-numbers horror movie. The intro is pretty cool . . . Then we have to sit and watch Liv Tyler and her b/f act awkward around one another for about 15-20 minutes . . . Once the "strangers" show up, it gets pretty suspenseful . . . for awhile, at least. The ending sucks, though . . . very un-climactic and boring. This is one of those movies that's chock full of scenes where everything's really quiet, and you know one of the killers is about to pop out of nowhere, and you keep telling yourself "don't jump, don't jump," and then the killer jumps out, the music blares, and you nearly jump out of your skin, while cursing yourself for falling for the oldest trick in the book. I say just wait and rent it on DVD . . . 2 out of 5 stars.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Meth and Yeast Infections

Average. Nothing like I expected it to be after all the positive reviews.

How the hell could you have expected anything more than the coming attractions showed you?

Finally saw Iron Man. I was relieved that it lived up to the hype. Don't know if its the best superhero movie ever but definitely one of them. in my opinion.

Also got around to seeing There Will Be Blood.  Daniel Day Lewis should just automatically be nominated for the Best Actor award when he signs on to a film. This would have been a good movie without him, but gets taken to a new level withhim in the lead. That little fucker that played Eli was pretty damn good too.

Love this movie. Mark Ruffalo is a great up and coming actor. I wish he would get more movies. He has one out with Joquain Phoenix that I have to rent when I get home.

Someone called it Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Bribed Critics. or something like that. Made me laugh. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. I enjoyed it, had fun. Didn't care for the ending CG-fest though.

National Treasure 2.
A real disappointment. It was totally realistic, not that these types of films are realistic, but this one was just over the top. it bordered on stupid. It got to the point where the movie lost all credibility because it was just too much of a stretch for anyone to believe. Nicolas Cage deserves much better.

You Don't Mess With the Zohan--- Absolutely hilarious. The Sandman's funniest movie in the last few years. If you like Sandler's crude humor, and Judd Apatow's raunchiness, you should definitely go see this movie. Don't worry about the trailer. I had several friends who either didn't see it or didn't want to see it, all because of the preview that's been aired 18,000 times, which isn't really all that funny. Most of the really funny jokes in the movie are too sexual to be put into a trailer for general audiences.
