Last Film You Saw.

I think it was Get Shorty, but I'm not sure.  There was some movie with Michael Imeperioli on ABC last night that I started watching, but I had to get up early.

Superbad was okay in my opinion.......funny in spots, but nowhere near what people were making it out to be. ?I'm not really a big Jonah Hill fan so that took away a bit for me. ?I did have a laugh at McLovin' when they were getting him to go into the liqour store at first and he just had that random panic attack and starting freaking out.

The Golden Compass with my daughter

Pretty good.? Anti-religion, which is always very interesting.? Unfortunately, I think the subject matter being discussed was often over my 8 yr old's head.? I understood it though.? From a story standpoint, I was very much intrigued.? The idea of souls being separated from humans in the form of daemons for each person made my daughter's imagination light RIGHT up ? I also found myself explaining the idea of different dimentions to her after the movie.? Try explaining metaphysical ideas in language an 8 yr old will understand, it's not easy!

It's very obvious that there will be sequel...or at least there's an intention for a sequel.? I hate when movies end like that?

I believe it's actually intended to be a trilogy.

I think that both sequels have already been green-lit. LittleFly, you should try reading the books. If you enjoyed the themes that you mentioned, which from what I've heard are massively stripped down in the movie from what was in the book, then you'll love 'em.

If you had to make a film encompassing what you thought was true to the book though, how long would it have to be?  Or maybe the question to ask is how expensive?

I remember seeing the Narnia movie that came out some time ago and feeling disappointed.  It started out great - the characters of Edward, Lucy and the Witch were well-played and I felt I was in a magical land. But then it reverted to battles comprised of cgi sequences.

If you had to make a film encompassing what you thought was true to the book though, how long would it have to be?  Or maybe the question to ask is how expensive?

I would either go two ways about it; include as much as possible or rip next to everything out. I'm not buying into any middle ground here.

If I was including as much as possible, most true adaptions would require two movies. When I was reading King's Dark Tower series, I kept imagining how they would (or, could) translate into film. I think that I reasoned at the time (it was a couple of years ago now) that in order for them to be made into as true a representation of the books as possible, you would have to make at least ten films, of course in the process splitting books and mixing those splits with either previous or subsequent ones... Of course, that would never happen.
(Oh, and that's obviously not taking into account certain "questionable" aspects of the series that could probably do with being chopped out all together... Let's just work on the assumption that it's all gold (which, it almost nearly is))

If that's not your thing (and let's face it, Hollywood aren't about to greenlight one of my five hour long adaptions any time soon), then I would rip everything out. I see no point in trying to cram in as many aspects as you can in order to stay true to the book... By doing that you aren't staying true at all! In my mind it is best to find the story that you want to tell within a book and start from there. There are books that are ideal for adaptations, but quite often they are books that either aren't all that great, or short stories (case in question seeing as I brought up the man, Darabant's first two King adaptions).

The long and short of it is though, just not all books should be translated to the screen. That's not to say that they can't (pre-Peter Jackson LOTR opinion), just that, well... There's really no need that they should be.

As for best sellers, well, I wouldn't want the job of having to adapt one. You can't strip out all the juice and find your own story because there is already an expectation to meet of what people want to see. Generally one of the only ways to tell your story from a book is adapt one that hasn't sold too well. And usually they work the best, because they become a hybrid of film and literature... Rather than just a way of bringing the characters to life.

Or not, as the case tends to be.

While on the subject, I'll tell you a book that I have thought for years would make for a great adaption; Virgil's Aeneid. As soon as I get some leverage in the industry, that's what I'll be making!

yes, that's a good point, there are a lot of movies that introduced to me to the book and I have become fond of both the director's vision and the author's original vision.
It can also bring much deserved recognition to the author. Case in point would be Philip K Dick.  From Blade Runner to Minority Report to the recent Scanner Darkly, many of his stories have adapted for film, and he was relatively unknown before that.

While on the subject, I'll tell you a book that I have thought for years would make for a great adaption; Virgil's Aeneid. As soon as I get some leverage in the industry, that's what I'll be making!

In keeping with your 'telling a story you want to tell within a book', I hope you focus more on the journey and travels, otherwise it could end up like certain other Greco-Roman films who shall not be named.  You could have a lot of fun with the mythology and bringing the gods to life.  I mean, you could find the right actors to play the parts or do something wacky a la Robin Williams as the blue genie god in Aladdin.  And once you've released your precious work you'd have to sit back and watch the liberals and conservatives hijack it in defense or criticism of Western European values. Oh, the joy.

Great animation movie. Seen with 3D sunglasses... It killed! The characters would seem they were just near you or that it was raining in the entire theather room... just awsome!
