if you dont want to spend the money on a MicroTrack you could always get a mini-disc player or mp3 player htat has the ability to record.  I have the iRiver H340 mp3 player and if you use the rockbox firmware on it you can record to .wav format with no time limits like the regular firmware has.  But if you want the recordings to be good quality the most important thing is probably to get good mics which can cost $200+ by themselves    http://www.soundprofessionals.com has gome good stealthy ones.   You should probably also ask advice from people on this forum:  http://taperssection.com/index.php

JB3 from Creative. The hard drive holds 20 GB and it records directly in WAV, therefore there is no compression,  unlike what you get with minidisc recorders. The only downside is that's it's a bit bulky, but other than that it's fine.

However, like SuicideUZI said,  I personnally recommend you to invest more into your mics than into the actual recorder. It's much much more important as far as sound quality is concerned.

ok it gets more and more compicated but ill will persue this further and hopefully we will get some bootlegs from the latter uk dates from me.

Edit: ok found this http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SONY-MZ-M100&convert_from=usa&convert_to=uk

i know its minidisc but i can cope with that 2 per shoe

it says it comes with a microphone but it wont be too good so what microphone can you suggest for ?120 or $200 approx

sorry i am going so blind into this i know shit about it all all i want is something easily sneakable into a venue i hope you trust the fact i wont be selling Wink

If you want something easily sneakable, a minidisc recorder is the best solution, no doubt. But I don't know much about them so I'm afraid I can't give you any recommendations.

As far as mics, I personnally bought the CMC-4 model, and I'm happy with it.  There are two types of mics : cardioid and binaural. Cardioids are unidirectional whereas binaurals are omnidirectionals. Everyone has different opinions about what's best, it's up to you to weigh up the positive and negative aspects of each.

You might also want to buy a small battery that will give extra power to your mics. This one for example :

How big are these mics? Cause I'm imagining microphones like the ones singers use. What are you meant todo with them in the gig? Hold them in the air and point them at the stage? "Excuse me Mr. Security Guy, could you hold this for a second? I need to scratch my balls."

They're about as big as the ones you see on TV when people are being interviewed. You can clip them to your shirt/jacket.

I have a mini disc recorder and it had served me well.  On the hammersmith audio thread, 1st post I have given the name of the mic.  It is a good small mic but more importantly you want a CONDENSOR mic.  This will allow you to record all the instruments in one go better.
