I bought the "What Hits" Album about 8 years ago and I found it the other day and broke it out and it took TIME to get into some of those songs.

Now though there are a bunch i really dig.

I read this on the By The Way page in wikipedia:

Quote
"It was an unpleasant experience for me. There was definitely tension in the group, tension between John and I, and I didn't feel comfortable creatively within the band. I didn't feel free to express myself. All of that was resolved during the Stadium sessions, and we got to this place where we felt very free. We were all getting along and all working together well, and when we do that, that's when we're at our best ? that's when the real magic happens." - Flea

Was Flea not happy with the album, or just the process of creating it?  I was suprised to read that, By The Way is my favourite Chili Peppers album.

D, I'm find it funny that you're defending how diverse the Chili Peppers are when you aren't even that familiar with the older albums... once you listen to them the whole way through you'll see how right you actually are!  Tongue

I don't know if Flea was unhappy with the album, but he didn't like the process of making it.
I know at least John didn't like how the album turned out, productionwise.
he said he liked the way the demos sounded better, and that he loves the songs.

yeah D I know what you're talking about, the What Hits? album is the first I heard of the 80s Peppers too, back in 94. and yep, it took time to get into it!

i have been a chilis fan for years, and i liked there early stuff and i like there last couple of albums too.i think californication is there best followed by blood sugar.
im looking forward to hearing the new album however the only thing i have heard is the new single and the only hing i like about it is the guitar solo.i think kiedis sucks too both vocally and lyrically.

I just checked out the tracklist for that "What Hits?" album... it's all old school!  Funny that there aren't more BSSM songs on there (I only spotted "Under The Bridge"?)

I think Knock Me Down might be my favourite RHCP song.

yeah Knock Me Down is one of my favourites as well!
up till BSSM they were on EMI, between Mother's Milk and BSSM they switched to Warner Bros.
What Hits? was released by EMI in 94, Im assuming they made a deal with WB to have the biggest hit, Under the Bridge, on the album.
What Hits? is also out on DVD with all their 80s videos, plus some live stuff, some hilarious stuff on there! Grin

BA, IMO Kiedis did the finest job on DC. lyrically it's ok, but the vocals are great.

His vocals are fine but his lyrics do need some work. I own all 8 studio albums from the peppers, plus the greatest hits cd released in 2003 plus I got the live in hyde park import in August of 2004. So, I can't wait for stadium arcadium to come out especially with so much music to listen to.

D, he doesn't know how to write lyrics. Just read them. Read Warm Tape, those lyrics are horrible.

Only song where the lyrics arent the greatest in my opinion is maybe "Minor Thing" which is still a damn good song.

I'm not trying to piss you guys off. It actually isn't Warm Tape I was talking about, it was a mix-up, it was another song off of By The Way. I apologize.

I'll go look for it online and bring it up again.

By The Way, Warm Tape is a deep song.

U gotta watch what u criticize though.

Not every song has to be a masterpiece and deep.

Not every GNR song is deep and not all GNR songs have great lyrics.

But to say Kiedis doesnt write great lyrics is simply not accurate.

Earlier in his career he may not have wrote the greatest of lyrics but Mother's Milk to now he is amazing.I love AK cause I relate to him so well.

AK like myself wasnt born with a naturally gifted set of pipes but he persevered and with hard work developed into an amazing frontman and a pretty damn good singer now. I wasnt born with a great voice but instead of giving up I used AK as my inspiration and realized I could do it, So even though Ill never be a beautiful singer I have vastly improved my vocals thanks to AK showing me if u work hard enough and want it bad enough, U can get pretty damn good at it.

So I apologize if i go a little off but Anthony is one of my biggest inspirations and heroes and Ill fight to the death defending him.

Thought about it, may do so cause they definitely helped Kiedis tremendously.

Okay, some examples of lyrics (off of By The Way) that I don't like so much:

Universally Speaking:

Verse 1

Bloodshot your smile,
Delicate and Wild
Give me she wolf smile
Rip right through me.
(This lyrics are just stupid. She-wolf smile? Bloodshot your smile? LOL.)

---

A song you mentioned yesterday called This is the place. The entire thing.

---

Don't Forgot me:

"I'm a methlab first rehab
Take it all off
And step inside the running cab
There's a love that knows the way."
(Force rhymes, force rhymes, force rhymes.)

I'm an inbred and a pothead
Two legs that you spread
Inside the toolshed
Now we all know it all for sure.
(More force rhymes and this one is just dumb.)

---

And finally the Zephyr Song:

"Rebel and a liberator
Find a way to be a skater
Rev it up to levitate her
Super friendly aviator
Take a look its on display - for you
Coming down no not today"

Superfriendly aviator? Force rhymes again.
Kiedis has problems with this.

***

anyways, some of his lyrics are great like Warm Tape and Can't Stop. But, others are just not.

I'm big on lyrics, more than most people so you'll have to forgive me if I offended someone who's not so big on lyrics.
