MSN vs. AIM
«

It seems like a lot of people here have MSN messenger. I have it but I never use it and I don't know much about it. I've always used AIM. I'm just wondering what the difference is, and is one better than the other?

Oh boy, I only found out about MSN YESTERDAY! Seriously, I'm not kidding here. So, this question really is too tough for me. Never even heard of AIM before...... would love to know the answer though. Can show the kids at school and then I'm cooler than they are

AIM is AOL's free messenger. So do you use any messenger program?

MSN is free too, and it's a helluva lot better than AIM!
Yahoo Messenger is also better than AIM IMO.

i have my american friends on aim
european on msn
i dont use yahoo anymore
on msn you can change your name to what ever you want.
on aim you have detailed away messages
but when you use some aggregator like TRILLIAN, you do what you want.
nothin is really better, just need the right one regarding on where you are.

Wat-ever, does that mean it is mainly a continental difference, since you use MSN for your European friends and AIM for the American ones? Stupid question probably, but I'm quite stupid when it comes to stuff like this.
No, Sterling, I only use MSN and I'm not very good at it
But hey, I only found out about it yesterday, so all I need is some time..... I did notice that my screen looks different from the pupil's. They have all sorts of extras. I want extras too. Maybe I just need to catch one of them cheating on his test and make him explain MSN to me..... before kicking him out of school of course
I stick to the rules. Very very strict teacher here

well, to me it seems AIM is more known in America, and MSN in Europe.
I just prefer MSN, looks better and you can do more stuff on it, I think. Im not super familiar with AIM or anything...it just looks like a late 90s chat program to me.
Yahoo transfers files much quicker than MSN, but you can only transfer files up to 100mb.
basically, you just gotta use what your friends use, like the buggin dude said.

Well my friends use AIM, for the most part. But I could get them to switch if it was worth the trouble; I'm persuasive. That's why I'm wondering which is better. What can you do on MSN that you can't do on AOL?
I know what Trillian is, but it seems complicated and I haven't wanted to take the time to understand it. Is it easy to use?

I despise MSN Messenger. Not sure why, just never liked using it.
Yahoo is my messenger of choice, followed closely by AIM. MSN is a distant third with ICQ left in the dust at the starting line.

I've always preferred AIM. I've used the other ones a few times in the past, but just didn't like the usability of them (they may have changed by now). I don't like that Yahoo doesn't have an "away message" they have a little status message you can display next to your name, but it's not as useful as AIM's. I've used Trillian, it's good if you have friends on different programs (e.g. Yahoo, MSN, AIM), and it fits all into one interface so you don't have to have a billion different windows open.

MSN is way better than AIM. Especially the new Live Messenger version.
I also use Yahoo! Messenger, Skype, and Google Talk.
MSN is definitely the best out of all of them.
One thing I've found out though is that MSN is more popular in the UK than in the US, while AIM is more popular in the US than in the UK.

Trillian is cool, I used to have it, and it saves space on your computer, since you don't need to have all messengers installed, but I still prefer the original thing, so in my case, I'd much rather have all of them installed than just use Trillian, but it depends, I find it quite useful though.

I've always liked MSN's message received *ping* alot more. It's much more pleasant than that horrible *ping* you get from AIM.

I don't IM very often, but when I do I use MSN.
Ze reason? Because everyone I know uses MSN. Give or take anyway.
And I don't know or care what's "better". I just use the friggin' thing when I need to. Which isn't often.
Obligatory fourth line.

You can change the sound in AIM in Options :? Long ago when I first started out on the internet I had AOL, so that's probably why I'm partial to it. I remember the first time being in a chat room and all these people kept saying "IM me." I thought they were drunk. "You are you? Duh."

I'm also a Trillian user.
Used to have Miranda also at one point, but switched back. I really have no use for the 90% of the 'extra features' I'd get with using the original MSN. If I _really_ need one of 'em, I can start it up.
