Already put this on the other NYC thread, but thought I'd try here too:

For anyone who is very familiar with New York or who lives there, can you recommend a few places to stay? I have been told that hotel rates in New York are insane, and I have seen some evidence of that on the web. Any ideas for cheaper rooms? Is there a college or university renting rooms, things like that? Perhaps there are places much cheaper in New Jersey or something that can be reached by taking a 24-hour subway or bus. Not talking about sleazy or dangerous places, just something reasonably priced.

Maybe we can work something out, I work at a hilton branded hotel and I shouldnt have a problem getting a discount at a hotel within 10 miles of the venue although it will most likely be in new jersey.? If you or anyone can help me get 2 tickets to the May 15th show then I would be glad to let you use my discount as well, it would most likely be something like a hampton inn or hilton inn for $30 - $40 a night.? The only thing is we would have to make arrangements so that we are checking in and checking out at the same time because the rooms would have to be in my name
I used to work at the Hilton Reservations Worldwide call center in Tampa. How I wish I could still get those great discounts.lol

If I fly into La Guardia what's the best option for transportation? Taxi? How much is a taxi in NYC? I've only been to NYC once but it was a long time ago and more of a sightseeing thing.

I know this will probably be moved but...

Will it be a crazy mess driving into NYC around 6:00 pm on Wednesday?? Train or bus does not seem logical due to the fact that I must be back ASAP on Thursday...? anyone familiar with the parking there too?? Should be more than enough room, right?

LaGuardia is about the same distance as JFK. About 4 years ago a car service from JFK to the lower east side was about 40 bucks. Hope that helps

Traffic is always bad in midtown, parking will be $25 to $35 per hour.? Where are you coming in from?

*edit* unless you are staying at a hotel, then they charge you $30-40 a day for the parking, well worth it

According to MapQuest La Guardia is about 7 miles closer to Hammerstein than JFK. JFK appears to have slightly cheaper plane tickets though, does anyone know which one is best for transportation from the airport?

I would suggest parking somewhere safe and walking.  Then again, I don't live in NYC and don't know how safe that is.

Take a train brother, it will probably save you a ton of cash and frustration. ?Penn station is right next to the place, go to their webiste and see if they have any schedules up?

Is it cheaper to fly into LaGuardia??

Alot of factors go into that. Some airlines will be cheaper at JFK, others at LGA.

I'm going from Ft. Lauderdale: roundtrip to JFK is $190. LGA is $170. Thats on JetBlue

Travel in NYC sucks. ?There's no way around it. It's always a crazy mess. You're coming from Mass....if you've driven in and around Boston....take that and make it about 25X worse.

Check the train schedules. ?Penn Station is pretty close to the Hammerstein, well within walking distance. ?Depending on when the last train out is...you may want to consider that option.

Don't ride a bus, if you can help it.

On site parking sucks. ?It exists, but it's hard to get and expensive. ?If you're coming at 6 PM for a Hammerstein show, with General admission.....don't bother. ?You'll find parking just about the time the show lets out. Smiley

Taxis are prevalent. ?The subway is an option, provided you're going to be with a group (the early trip would be fine...the late trip out...well, you'll want friends with ya. Smiley

The next train out of Penn would be 8:00 AM for me to get home.  Might be too late.

What about out to New Haven?? Do they have a late Metro North train?

You could drive down to the NH train station, take Metro North down to Grand Central, a cab to the show, and then a late Metro North train back to NH and drive home.

YOu could drive your car to Laguardia or JFK airport, park in long term, take a cab or whatever into the city, take te cab out after the show, and be on your way. ?All of that is probably still cheaper and less frustrating then driving and parking near the venue.

Wow.. thats crazy.  My flight roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale is only $148.  You'd think, if I were going by miles involved, the Boston - NYC trip would be alot cheaper.

Nope, Boston/NYC is considered a hot commuter flight.  They charge, relatively, a good sized premium on it.
