Mustaine owns but it would have been too risky to have him stay in Metallica, so i'm glad they sacked him and he made Megadeth, that way everyone is satisfied. St. Anger had potential but Lars ruined it, it was his idea for no solos, St. Anger has one good song and that is Dirty Window. Load is alright because Until It Sleeps is acceptably pleasing.

Also, if Mustaine stayed in Metallica, I doubt the black album would have existed (whether you like it or not), plus S&M would almost-definately have never happened which would have been a shame as S&M with Metallica and Michael Kamen & the Sanfransico Symphony Orchestra is an absaloute masterpiece.

At the end of the day, both Metallica and Dave Mustaine & Megadeth are phenominal.

Hmm i've never been sure of this - i always thought Mustaine played lead on the album but rthymn live - surely, somewhere, we have a breakdown of who wrote what on which album - i find it hard to believe Mustaine one of the most highly regarded guitarists in the world was a rythmn guitarist.....

in 1996 I read an interview where mustaine said Load was one of the best albums of the year so I don't think he would have opposed going in a new direction as much as some may think. Also I think you have to factor in the hetfield/ulrich stronghold on things. I don't think no matter who was in the band it would have made too big a difference outside of playing skills because Metallica has always been James and Lars baby. They write a pretty large portion of all the songs just the two of them. I am not saying others don't contribute because they do but look at the writing credits on all of their albums and you will get what I am saying.
So with that said I think it really comes down to playing and while I am a fan of daves I think kirk whipes the floor with him and as said in an above post he is seriously under rated. And for practical reasons: We wouldn't have megadeth and Kirk wrote the riff for enter sandman. I know most of us have heard that song a billion fuckin times but it's still a great tune and one I would not want to be without.
And I for one like the load and reload albums alot. It def. is in a different vein than most of metallica's other material but I really liked alot of the songs. I will admit that they were the first metallica albums to ever have filler songs tho. Some of the tracks are real bland.
And as far as St. Anger goes it is a fucking train wreck. Even if u can sit thru the drum pings the songs are horrible. I had trouble coping with the fact that a band that made an album like Master of puppets (by far their best in my eyes, any casual fans who don't own it go pick it up and I swear to you that you will not be let down) had manufactured this garbage.
That said it had been a long time since they released anything and they had so much shit going on with james rehab and jason leaving that maybe they just wanted to rush something out. Hopefully next time around they will put out a real Metallica album....and jason will come back. Not a trujillo fan. OK I just realized I went a little off topic and this post is getting really long so I'll end it.

I really dont think it would have worked with Dave, you couldnt fit Lars, James and Dave's egos in the same room, Kirk is pretty laid back and kinda just goes along for the ride with Lars and Hetfield, and i think that is how they like it. Off topic a bit but Load and Reload arent that bad, change is a good thing , I like that, Def Leppard did it with Slang, Motley did it with Swine , I think Slang is Def Lep's best effort to date, but back to Metallica, St. Anger is possibly the worst album ever made by a "rock" band, and i think when Newsted left , his depature really made an impact in the live show, Metallica always delivers live and still do but Robert Trujillo just doesnt work with Metallica at all.

Mustaine is a great guitarrist , I enjoy megadeth, but Kirk Hammet is Metallica's Lead Guitar ,so What Is Metallica?? well, Metallica  is the best Trash Metal Band.....No question asked!

Even ST anger has "better" music than any song in Risk. Megadeth  has good music but a lot of fillers in their albums a lot of avarage music. Im not comparing them, but as long as "rockers" in here compare 'em i just want them to open their eyes and make 'em realize that everyband changes their directions and have aweful albums.

And Rust in Piece is better than any album Metallica ever did. It's too bad most of Megadeth's other albums don't come near RIP's level...
