Metallica?s Lars Ulrich has revealed that the band has plans to begin work on a new album in 2011.

In an interview with Pulse of Radio, the drummer said ?There?s a bunch of balls in the air for 2011, but I think the main one is we really want to get back to writing again. We haven?t really written since, what, 2006, 2007 and we want to get back to kind of just being creative again.

?Right now we are going to just chill out and then probably start up again in, I?d say, March or April and start probably putting the creative cap back on and start writing some songs.?

Plans for 2011 are minimal at this point, according to Ulrich and Burnstein: The group is scheduled to play Brazil's Rock in Rio festival next September, and writing for the follow-up to "Death Magnetic" should begin sometime in the first half of the year. The other night in Adelaide, Australia, the band members even threw around some new riffs in the tuning room.

Ulrich says Metallica is nearing the fulfillment of its current record deals all over the world, which means the band has some "interesting decisions to make" about how (and with whom) it will sell its music in the future. He's not worried, though. "Given the slow pace at which we write albums," he says with a laugh, "it's not something we'll have to deal with any time soon."

'Big 4' metal bands Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax to perform April 23 in Indio
Empire Polo Club will be only U.S. stop for groups, Goldenvoice promoter says

Four of the world?s top heavy metal bands are tentatively scheduled to perform April 23 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio ? during the one dark Saturday between the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, it was announced today.

The Los Angeles-based Goldenvoice company told The Desert Sun in an exclusive interview it won a bid last weekend to present the only United States concert by the lineup of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax.

The concert promoters are scheduled to present a proposal to the Indio City Council at 5 p.m today for permission to stage the concert from around 4 to 11 p.m. Indio Mayor Lupe Ramos Watson said Monday she plans to attend the show if the council approves a permit.

?I grew up in the time of Metallica,? she said. ?It?s an enjoyable experience.?

The tickets would be $99 plus fees and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster outlets.

Digitaldreamdoor.com ranks Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax as the four best thrash or speed metal bands, as distinguished from the broader genre of heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. The foursome have been touring Europe as The Big 4 and were widely expected to perform a tour of the United States.

But Goldenvoice promoter Paul Tollett said this will be their only U.S. concert. He categorized winning the bid over other concert promoters as ?winning the lottery.?

Tollett was forced to move Stagecoach: California?s Country Music Festival back to April 30-May 1 because it would have ended on Easter Sunday if it had maintained its tradition of following the April 15-17 Coachella Music and Arts Festival at the polo field. It might have cost Goldenvoice millions of dollars to keep equipment rentals and security on the Empire Polo Club for three weeks, but now there will only have to be minor adjustments to sandwich a third major concert between the two festivals.

There won?t be camping and there probably will be fewer concertgoers for The Big 4.

Tollett refused to speculate how many people the metal bands might attract, but Metallica drew 50,000 people for its 2003 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park. Goldenvoice plans to run a shuttle service from four or five locations around Southern California to the polo club. It also will run shuttles to and from major hotels in the east valley.

Last year?s Coachella festival drew 225,000 people over three days, and Stagecoach attracted more than 100,000 over two days.

The festival will give Coachella Valley hotels major tourism events for five consecutive weeks with the Dinah Shore Weekend starting the celebrations March 30-April 3. The White Party in Palm Springs is scheduled the next weekend.

Watson said she won?t know how neighbors of the Empire Polo Club will feel about three major concerts on three consecutive weekends until they?ve had a chance to be heard at today?s City Council meeting, but she said past festivals have created ?a very positive experience for everyone who lives in the area.?

?My personal feelings are that the events held at the polo fields are a big boost to the economy for the Coachella Valley as a whole, not just the city of Indio,? she said. ?If you collectively count all the festivals that are held at the polo grounds, we have over a million visitors to our Coachella Valley annually and that brings with it disposable cash that gets spent in our community (and) creates job opportunities for our residents in the Coachella Valley. So I see it as a very important part of this CV?s economy.?

Yesterday Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax announced plans to invade the massive Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, for a one-day festival by the ?Big 4? originators of thrash-metal on April 23. The concert, which follows an historic seven-date tour of Europe last year, will be the first joint U.S. appearance by these four horsemen of thrash.

It seems the feuds of the past are a distant memory. ?Most of the egos and sandbox issues from the Eighties and Nineties have dissipated,? says Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. ?We actually enjoy each others' company and are comfortable celebrating the past while continuing our path into the future. It's cool. Who would have known that anybody actually still gives a shit? We're very fortunate.?

When Ulrich saw Rage Against the Machine erupt at the desert venue during the Coachella Festival in 2007, it left a powerful impression. ?It was a fantastic vibe out there,? he recalls. ?Coachella seemed like the right place to do it. If this thing works, hopefully we can do an additional show somewhere else.? (This summer, the Big 4 also return to Europe for two festivals: Knebworth in England, and Sonisphere in Amneville, France.)

?I'm chomping at the bit to do a full-blown tour at stadiums across the country,? said Slayer guitarist Kerry King. Indeed, during last year's stadium tour through Europe, demand from around the world was so great that the penultimate concert in Bulgaria was broadcast into hundreds of movie theaters via satellite, and then issued on DVD. The fall release of The Big 4 Live from Sofia, Bulgaria is already certified double-platinum. At that concert, members of all four acts jammed onstage together through a thundering, euphoric cover of Diamond Head's ?Am I Evil.?

?A lot of this music has aged really well,? Ulrich says. ?There are a lot of 12-year-olds that show up at these rock shows. It's scary to see a whole slew of 12-year-olds up against the barricade down in the front. It's a great thing to be part of their right of passage.?

Even though each of the Big 4 toured across the U.S. last year, demand for tickets is expected to be high. ?All of them together, that puts a whole different slant on it,? says Paul Tollett, the co-founder of Coachella, whose Goldenvoice Productions is hosting the thrash fest. ?Those records just hold up so well. They may be playing better live nowadays than they ever have.?

Tickets are priced at $99. No camping will be allowed in the venue's heavy metal parking lot, but parking is free and shuttle buses will ferry head-bangers in from across SoCal.

Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief at the concert trade magazine Pollstar, called the show ?a heavy metal Coachella? likely to attract multiple generations of fans. ?They don't have to do Coachella-size numbers to make this work,? says Bongiovanni. Metallica was the fifth-highest grossing touring band worldwide in 2010, earning $110.1 million in just 60 dates. ?Metallica is the clear headliner in this package. And pricing it at $99 makes it attractive if you're a metal fan.?

But Metallica are not committing to any future festivals ? yet.

?I'm not saying this is the last one,? says Ulrich. ?But I don't want this to turn into something that overtakes everybody's schedules for the next couple years. If we keep it special, it's better than to overstay your welcome and people run screaming away. Let's see what happens.?

METALLICA To Enter Studio In March Or April - Feb. 1, 2011

Danish tabloid newspaper Ekstra Bladet conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich last month at the band's headquarters in San Rafael, California. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. (Note: All original Danish-language quotes were translated into English by BLABBERMOUTH.NET.)

On when the band plans on returning to the studio to begin work on the follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic":

"There's a really good vibe in the band at the moment. In the past, we would be fed up with METALLICA whenever we returned home after a gigantic world tour, but this time it's different. Therefore it won't be that long before we start working on a new album. I think that we'll probably already get the creative process going in March or April and go into the studio. We really want to get back to METALLICA quickly because we are enjoying it so much right now."

On how the relationship between the METALLICA bandmembers has changed over the years:

"It helps our relationships that we've all got families and children and they all get along with each other. We really fucking like each other at the moment. There were a few years when things were really bad. We never really got to talk to each other; we would just grab a bottle of vodka and go out looking for girls. That meant that we weren't sharing our feelings with each other. Today we talk a lot about our children and our families. And the fact that we have something to talk about other than tonight's setlist is or if someone made a mistake during yesterday's show makes a big difference. In the last five or six years, we've found out where our limits are and we've made some rules regarding METALLICA. That's been necessary in order to make sure the entire thing doesn't collapse. For instance, we have a rule that we cannot be on the road for more than two weeks at a time during the school year and we make sure that we spend two weeks at home before going back on tour. That prevents us from burning out and falling into the trap that you can sometimes fall into when you are tired and worn out."

On playing 215 concerts in 45 countries in support of "Death Magnetic":

"Of course it's still hard to play that many shows, but the older you get, the less you take success for granted. It's beginning to dawn on us that what we have together is very special and that we're not gonna live forever. It's awesome that a bunch if semi-old farts like us can still travel around the world and thousands of people wanna share that experience with us."

On the 30th anniversary of his meeting with METALLICA frontman James Hetfield and the band's formation:

"It's been totally awesome. When I look back, what I'm most proud of is that we've actually survived, that we've lived through the last 30 years and come out of it relatively unscathed and that we are now able to function as a unit, as people and as fathers. We found solutions to the problems that we've had instead of letting internal squabbles destroy the band, which, for instance, happened to our friends in GUNS N' ROSES."

On whether Danish fans can expect to see METALLICA again anytime soon:

"The tour schedule hasn't been finalized yet, but as of right now, there are no plans to play Denmark. But let's see what happens. We usually come around every two or three years and our friends from the Roskilde festival also call us every now and then and ask us to play. If it doesn't happen this year, we will play in Denmark in 2012."

Truly amazing they have lasted 30 years, with no signs of slowing down.  They are the most successful and biggest hard rock/metal band of the last 30 years, you would think the ego's would have destroyed them, yet they just played 215 shows in 45 different countries( most of them sold out) to support their latest muti platinum, number 1 recorrd...truly incredible is you really want to think about it.

METALLICA's LARS ULRICH Starring In HBO's 'Hemingway And Gellhorn'; The First Photo! - Mar. 24, 2011


METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has been cast in an HBO drama also starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen. The film, called "Hemingway And Gellhorn", is described as "a drama centered on the romance between Ernest Hemingway and WWII correspondent Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway's inspiration for "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and the only woman who ever asked for a divorce from the writer." Ulrich will play Dutch documentarian Joris Ivens in the TV movie.

This will be Ulrich's first substantial role in a feature film after making a cameo as himself in 2010's Russell Brand comedy "Get Him To The Greek". He also appeared in the 2004 documentary about METALLICA, "Some Kind Of Monster".

Ulrich is due back in the studio in May with METALLICA to begin recording a yet-to-be-revealed new project, which guitarist Kirk Hammett described to RollingStone.com.com as "more a recording project than a bona fide METALLICA album."

The band has also scheduled several more "Big Four" tour dates, including one in Indio, California on April 23.

When asked about acting in "Get Him to the Greek", Lars said in a 2010 interview, "It was so much fun. I mean, they sent the script and I learned my lines. And when I showed up on the set, none of it mattered ? they just took the script and threw it away. We were just improvising and having fun and insulting each other, and it was a great time. Russell, obviously, is a stand-up comedian, first and foremost, or at least he started as a stand-up comedian, so it's all just improvising."

Given the significance of discovering Metallica and with The Big Four taking over Indio next Saturday April 23, ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolorauthor Rick Florino spoke to numerous musicians and celebrities about the first time they heard Metallica and what the band means to them.

When did you first discover Metallica and what do they mean to you?

Slash [Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses]

Slash: I first discovered Metallica when they came out with their first EP. Metallica has always been one of my favorite heavy metal bands. I think that they are one of the most versatile metal bands that came out in the '80s. They are also one of the most creative. I think that James Hetfield is one of the greatest heavy metal guitarists to ever walk this earth.

Kerry King of Slayer

Kerry King: I imagine it was at The Woodstock in Orange County when Dave Mustaine was in the band. I instantly became a fan. I couldn't believe Mustaine was ripping these incredible leads way back then and not even looking at his fingers. I still fucking looking at my fingers [Laughs]. There were no records then it was just seeing them. I think Metallica might've just been on the Metal Massacre compilation or something.

Scott Ian of Anthrax and The Damned Things

Scott Ian: I was actually at Johnny Z's record store, Rock'n Roll Heaven, in New Jersey. He played me the No Life 'Til Leather demo so that was the first time I had ever heard any Metallica. It was pretty mind-blowing to hear for the first time. One of the coolest feelings about hearing it was just knowing there was another band out there on the West Coast that had the same mindset. Certainly, we didn't sound alike at the time. Just the fact that they were playing their own music and had their own thing going on was how we felt about what we were doing as Anthrax in New York. It's not like we had the Internet back then and you could find out what people were doing all over the world. We didn't know there were other bands doing their own thing. It was hard to find out back in the day unless you were tape trading and things like that. I heard Metallica and thought, "These guys have the same mindset that we do. We're obviously all into the same music." It was a really good feeling to know that there were other people out there like us.

Jonathan Davis of Korn:

Jonathan Davis: I first heard them on either Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning. I was at my buddy's house, and this guy came over and said, "You've got to hear this shit!" I was 14-years-old or something; I can't even remember how old I was [Laughs]. This dude put Metallica on, and I was like, "Wow, what the hell is that?" I only listened to them at that moment, and I sort of forgot about it afterwards. I thought it was cool, but I genuinely didn't get into them again until they hit with The Black Album. It was all over MTV at the time. I really got into Metallica when I got in Korn though. I love playing "One." It was cool to play it for them at the MTV Icon special. They're one of my favorite bands. I look up to them. They've been doing it for so long. That's truly the band I look up to?them and Ozzy Osbourne. We've also toured with Metallica a bunch; it's fucking awesome!

Fieldy of Korn & StillWell:

Fieldy: I was in high school! I remember I got Kill 'Em All. I heard it, and I didn't understand it. I was like, "What is this? It's fast metal, but I hear punk rock." I was blown away though. The musicians weren't sloppy at all; they were great. I was tripping out because it was the first time I heard something that was totally off the wall. I was even more blown away by Ride the Lightning. From there, I started following them and I became a fan all the way up to today. Death Magnetic is unbelievable! It's mind-blowing. I can't believe it. We'd love to tour with them again. They're really cool guys. It's an honor to play with Metallica.

Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour

Corey Taylor: I actually talk about when I discovered Metallica in my book?The Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad and Damaged Good. That's how big it was [Laughs]. I remember hearing Master of Puppets at a friend's house. That line at the end of "Damage Inc."?"Fuck it all and fucking no regrets"?was the one that every metal head waited for with baited breath. When it came, you'd jump up and scream along to it. It was amazing. Metallica will always be important to me!

Sully Erna of Godsmack

Sully Erna: I first discovered them somewhere around 1982 or 1983. It was the early '80s. I remember that a friend of mine came over with Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning. For whatever it was worth, this dude was always way ahead of his time. He knew what new thing was going to hit before it hit. I was still very much into Iron Maiden and Judas Priest at that moment. That was metal, but it wasn't Metallica metal. My buddy put on Ride The Lightning, and the first song I heard was "Fight Fire With Fire." I just said, "What the fuck is this?!" [Laughs] It so fast, the double bass was flying, and the vocals stood out. I didn't get it at first. However, a week later, I was like, "This is the greatest band ever to walk the planet!" I couldn't get enough. That was my first Metallica experience.

EXCLUSIVE: Metallica's Lars Ulrich On Surviving the Big 4 and the Roots of Thrash

Months of anticipation came to an explosive finish in the California desert on Saturday night, as Metallica closed their "Big 4" thrash-fest with a thundering "Seek & Destroy" for 50,000 weary headbangers spread across Empire Polo Field in Indio. By acknowledging their shared roots as thrash-originators with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, Metallica has found that looking back can also suggest a way forward for the band.

In an exclusive interview the day after, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich tells the LA Weekly how a partnership with Goldenvoice brought the Big 4 to the site of Coachella, the role their late bassist Cliff Burton played in Saturday's set, and how Metallica's newest album, Death Magnetic, (and producer Rick Rubin) somehow led them into the desert:
