A band has a duty to evolve its sound to keep intresting - but it can only go so far within certain boundaries, for instance, the Black album is as far as a thrash metal act can realistically go.
I'm asking them just to be sensible. If Slayer did a pop ballad it would never work, that's not stifling the band its about being sensible.

Heaviest production, eh? A little bass on the songs might have been nice.
Very very true
The production ruins what could be a fine album. Sort out the drums, increase the bass to give it that bit of punch and u'd have one hell of an improvement.

i was gonna start a thread on that but didnt
i thought it was funny, he wasnt makin fun or being a dick about it.
i think anyone who thinks the black album is metallicas greatest is more of a bandwagon fan than a true metallica fan.
i actually love all the songs ive heard off St Anger to be quite honest.

Why James Hetfield hates so much Axl?
Jealousy. Axl doesn't have St Anger, Load and Reload around his neck.
yeah. jealousy. thats exactly what it is.
Nevermind the fact that metallica is/was and probably always will be a much bigger band then GNR , old or new and that metallica has sold way over 90 million albums and was the biggest "heavy" band of all the 90's in terms of sales and tours.
Yep , I'm sure hetfield is SO jealous of axl rose.
I think if one was to be jealous of the other it would be axl jealous of james. James has sold more albums , generated more money on tour , battled his demons and was able to release another album , has a wife and children and after 20 years has kept Metallica going strong. Come on bro .. axl cant even touch that with a ten foot pole.

Jealousy doesn't have to mean album or ticket sales.
People can be jealous of somebody who has nothing.
I'm not saying James is jealous of Axl, because I don't know. But saying he can't be jealous just because he sold more albums, I don't see it that way.

If your going to go with the ticket thing, GN'R always destroyed Metallica with ticket sales to their shows from '91/'93.

Metallica may have sold more albums, but GN'R released fewer and were around a much shorter period of time
Metallica, although huge, arent quite in the same league as GN'R were
I mean, Axl and Slash were international celebrities, they were a phenomenon
Not to take anything away from Metallica, they are more 'journeymen' where as GN'R were that 'once in a generation band...'

I love Metal, but Load was my favourite album, along with justice so i think thats why i like st anger because it reminds me of both those albums. But load musically was fuckin awesome
Yeah, Load was great. Bleeding Me & Outlaw Torn are two of my favourite Metallica songs.
I also think that Load features James best vocal work
That Is so very true. And Lars played with a bluesy kinnda beat which is alot for talented then constant out of place double kickers.

Er...read again
Right...what you said was that Metallica should be free to express their creativity and experiment a little, but while staying within "certain boundaries". ?I think that's really the part where we disagree with here, Izzy. ?While we both think that the band should be free to experiment, I believe that they should be able to create ANY kind of music they want, while you believe that they should stick within a more-or-less thrash metal format.
I just agree with what somebody said in another thread - that when you make music, you should be free to make whatever you want, and about what you're feeling at the moment. ?James wrote "Mama Said" because it was a very personal song that was about something he was feeling at the moment. ?In my opinion, that's fine. ?He shouldn't feel that he should write a thrash metal song simply because that's what the fans want. ?If your heart isn't in that, then it won't be a very good song anyway. ?Music should come from the heart. ?I think Metallica did that with their older 80s stuff, when they were teenage metalheads; they did it with the Black Album, when they became the biggest rock band in the world; and they did it with
Load
, where they were starting to get a little more introspective and reflective.

See, this is gonna sound ridiculous, but I think it would be interesting to see Slayer do a pop ballad, just because it would be so totally unexpected. ?Tom Araya really likes The Beatles, so why not? ?Of course Slayer would never do that, because they have their thrash sound and they stick with it. ?But I really do believe that music should come from the heart, and that a good song is a good song. ?If a certain pop ballad is a beautiful song, then in the end I really don't care if it's by Slayer or Elton John.
But the thing is, Slayer doing a pop ballad would be so unlike anything they'd done before that it would just seem out of place, even if it was a good song. If it were the lone soft track on an album full of Satanic thrashers, it would be a little ludicrous. They would have to do something like Metallica did. The band opened up to softer music very slowly, starting with the odd softer song like "Fade to Black" in 1984. Then they made an entire album - the Black Album - in 1991 that had a generally more mainstream sound, and so they could fit in a couple of softer songs like "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters" without disrupting flow. So by the time of
Load
, they made an album that was more mainstream, and had a lot of softer tracks. The rockers were less thrashy and more bluesy, and so you could fit in a total left-field ballad like "Mama Said". That's why it worked. You couldn't put "Mama Said" on
Kill 'Em All
. A soft song has to have an appropriate framework in which to be successful.

LMFAO! Man , I LOVE GNR just as much as the next guy and have been following them since 1987 , but I couldnt force myself to believe that GNR arent in the same league as GNR. hahahaha .. thats just too funny. Metallica has a bigger fanbase , bigger back catolgue , more albums sold , more tickets sold , been together 20 plus years and are still relevant to this day.
Man alive , dont you see the facts in front of you? I mean Metallica pioneered the thrash metal genre from 81-88 .. then actually walked away from it and pretty much TOOK OVER mainstream radio play with the "black" album. Metallica isnt even touched by GNR in terms of success. Not by a mile. Sorry.
Again , I'm a GNR fan since 1987 ... I'm not bias towards metallica. I dont visit metallica websites , forums etc etc .. just plain and simple metallica is/was probably always will be the bigger band.

Oh yeah? 20 years. over a dozen albums. over 90 million albums sold. god knows how many people that put in stadiums and arenas all over the world in the 90's?!
Metallica were STILL a STRONG touring and recording UNIT when GNR were flaundering with member changes , lawsuits and Paul "yoko ono" Tobias type people during the 90's.
Sure , GNR were selling big on the UYI tours but they imploded. Metallica kept going. Damn , metallica KEPT it's fanbase and popularity while metal bands were falling by the wayside due to the influx of grunge bands during that period.
Do you think GNR coulda survived the grunge period as well as metallica? That is had they not disapeared for 10 years like they did.
To argue over how is/was the bigger band between metallica and guns n roses is , to me , insane as metallica is obviously so much bigger now and then.
I applaud some of you for actually "believing" in GNR being bigger and more of a sucess then metallica. You keep on beleiving.

Axl and Hetfield didn't get along for simple personality reasons. Hetfield is a real cowboy, (although one with a band shrink, hee!), whereas Axl was/is more of a diva. It didn't take a genius to see they were never going to get along.
Metallica may have sold more records, have incredibly loyal fans, and blah, blah, blah, but no question GnR were bigger international stars
at that time

Fair enough, good points there.
But this whole thing has become far too negative (and to the outside observer - u know who u r, we ain't saying we dislike the band, we're saying we've been dissapointed with recent offerings, its because we love the band (or atleast did) that we are critical
Okay,
what do people want from the new album
Personally i would love to see an album that is a worthy successor to the style of MOP, that heavy riffing and more mature soloing its famous for - while critics could say thats just rehashing the past and not moving on, in todays musical scene a classic thrash album (is MOP actually thrash?) would be very ''fresh'' and distinctive
Maybe an all instrumental album would be something to toy with - only an idea though.
I think its time Bob Rock left the team, i think his influence has overall not been complimentry - maybe a spell with Rick Rubin who's done wonders for so many metal albums

I totally disagree .. the black album ALONE made metallica bigger then GNR could ever hope. I'm sorry if it hurts to hear that but it's just plain simple.
And whats worst is the fact that these days you have that old gnr band broken up into seperate enities , one is semi successful (velvet revolver) the other (the new gnr) is pretty much a long running joke without a punchline. Whereas metallica is still a MAJOR tour draw , sold a bunch of albums with St.Anger and has SURVIVED band members leaving , in-fighting , drug addictions , rehab etc etc .. say what you want about them hiring a therapist but if you watch SKOM you will see that in hindsight it was the best move the band coulda made both personally and professionally.
And about that , how can anyone lauigh about that fact and turn a blind eye to axl's "yoda" sessions out in sedona?! It's been said that before axl could even hire a new crew member he had to forward a picture to yoda and have her tell him if said person was "right" or "wrong" for the band.
Again , I'm a loyal Axl/GNR fan .. just as much as the next guy but I just cant sit around and lie to myself about topics such as this (which has kinda now gone off topic) .... metallica just is and was bigger then GNR.
peace.

Youre wrong I'm afraid - yes Metallica have had more long term success
However, youve neglected to address the fact that GN'R were a phenomenon in their heyday
Metallicas success is due to longevity and perserverance, collectively in the mainstream and cultural psyche however, GN'R made a larger impression and a more lasting one at that.
Ask the person on the street who Axl Rose is and the majority will know. Ask after James Hetfield and decidedly fewer will know - this proves my point

I looked back several pages and couldn't find any mention of this in a thread, so I thought I might as well mention it.? Has anybody seen the deleted scenes on Metallica's "Some Kind of Monster" DVD?? There's this bit where James is sitting in a chair, and he puts a salad bowl on his head.? Then he acts as if he's being zapped in an electric chair, and goes "Welcome to the jungle, baby!" in this really high screechy voice.? I thought it was pretty funny...
I think if you're a public figure, you need to have some level of maturity. Even if you're a rock star, you're still a middle-aged man and you should act as such. I guess he feels like a big man 'cause he took a shot at Axl.

It wasnt a "shot" at axl!!! Man alive .. have you SEEN the scene in question?! They have sort of a mock electric chair set up there and james sit's in it and shakes around like axl in the WTTJ video and just says "you're in the jungle baby , you're gunna die" in a funny voice like ANYONE would use when doing an impersonation of axl .. it wasnt a slight against axl at all. And there was no mention of axls name in the movie , not in that or any other scene in the movie.
Geez , how blown out of proportion can you guys get with this?!

Now thats hilarious! You've gone out on the street and DONE this I assume? Or are you pulling this info out of your ass? Why do you think more people would know who axl is? cause he hasnt released an album in over ten years? Cause he hasnt really been seen in public in over ten years? WHY on earth would more people know who axl rose is TODAY over James hetfield? I mean james is STILL out touring , STILL releasing albums , JUST released a critically accalimed MOVIE worldwide for gods sake!!!
Where do you get the notion that Axl Rose is still more well known by the public then james?!
I just gotta roll my eyes at that .. but it's your opinion , not a fact so peace to you and believe what you will.

Right, because James would rather be holed up in some recording studio for over a decade. I guess releasing successful albums just isn't as impressive as being unable to hold a band together, being unable to release an album, and being unable to hold a tour together. I'm sure James is green with envy.

I love GnR much more than Metallica but this time, no one can argue Metallica's success. For a metal band, this is pretty much the top, the pennicle of success, and Metallica's been there.
