XFL
« on: May 05, 2006, 08:38:36 PM »

Sorry to start a new thread if this already exists.  But does anyone else feel that the XFL wasn't given a fair chance to succeed.  I went to one game and had a pretty good time.  If anyone has any open thoughts feel free to share them

It was bashed pretty brutally right from the beginning. It really wasnt allowed to grow properly. There was some very sloppy play at the beginning of the season but the quality of play definitely improved by the seasons end. I went to a few games in Orlando and had a  great time. Should have gotten at least another season

The XFL made a mockery out of football, it was childish and foolish.  It was wrestling on a field, I mean shit even the players hade fake names on their jerseys..."BONECRUSHER"

God that thing was awful

For me the names on the jerseys didnt do it in for me.

I remember opening night like yesterday.

1- I was watching one game up til half time and I believe one team was beating another like  17-0 or 20-0 nothing and after the half they switched it up and we seen the second half of another game that was closer in score and I thought that was pretty stupid.

2- I know they wanted to place teams in cities the NFL didnt have teams to help build a fanbase, but being from Michigan and not having a Detroit team (5 largest TV audience in the US) I thought was pretty poor planning afteral I really wasnt about to start cheering for a Chicago team (the closest we had) I think a detroit team would of been great sense my lions suck and the Michigan Panthers of the USFL actualy won the first championship in that league.

3- XFL.  What did the X stand for Extreme? According to Vince McMahon who owned the league with NBC it didnt stand for nothing besides X.

4- Trying the wrestling approach. Having wrestling announcers calling the games (and we all know wrestling is fake) kinda took away the seriousness of the game being played.

5- The new camera angels were a few years ahead of us and now the NFL uses some of the camera angles the XFL first used.

6- Having one owner own all the teams is good for keeping salaries down and what not, but think about the offseason, who controls the teams with FA and who makes the teams local.  With one owner he isnt trying to sell the teams locally to the towns they play which kills fanbases.

7- Few amount of teams.  I thought more of a territorial system then city system of teams would of played out better, like having the MIDWEST <insert team name here> Then they could play a game in chicago, one in detroit, one in cleveland, one in wisconsin and sell the team to many markets so more people could have a team to look at an support.

8- I believe after NBC cancelled airing a second season of the XFL,  UPN agreed to air the games but they wanted to scale back on the WWE's smackdown airtime to make it work and Vince wasn't up to that.

9-Million Dollar game was great idea, but better yet have it so the players onyl get payed if their team wins, You would see guys giving 200% then, and having the loosers maybe collecting $100, you would see guys play until the last second hoping to earn a paycheck.

10- Their cheerleaders were a little too over the top, sure it is nice to see a hot women casually while watching the carolina panthers score a touchdown , but to spend 30% of the game zooming in on the chicks privates and what not doesnt make the quick peek anyfun and only took away once again from the seriousness of the XFL.

ANyone else want to add a reason to my list?

The XFL is the biggest joke of the past few decades. Way too many mistakes were made. You couldn't take the league seriously. It should have been promoted as a legitimate sport, instead of it being some inauthentic freakshow promoting useless cheerleaders, losers with mediocre wrestling careers, and very average talent. People gave it a chance, but when fans immediately started to question the authenticity of the game, thats when everybody changed the channel.

I have a New Jersey/New York Hitman sweatshirt hidden somewhere in my house. Gotta find it. And yes, the NFL has ripped off a lot of XFL stuff recentely are will not give them credit. It was the same with the USFL, just needed more time.

USFL would of made it had they not wanted to switch from playing in the spring , (when most of the stadiums they were playing in where open) to playing in the fall and competing with the NFL.

I think the XFL should of started out in smaller markets that didnt have an NFL team just for starters. Putting an XFL team in Chicago, when they love their bears and putting a team in San Fran when they love their 49ers, doesnt make much sense to me.

I think the XFL could of flourished if they kept all of the wrestlers out of the broadcast booth and shut Vince Mcmahon up.  I'm a wrestling fan (sorta), but I don't think having HHH call plays was a good idea for average football fans.

It made the league look fake.

Actually, USFL would've probably made it if it weren't for that counterproductive anti-trust lawsuit and Donald Trump. Oh...what could've been.

and to Mr. Shuffle...uhhhh Triple H never called any plays or announced. I guess he can be confused with a retired bald wrestling politician (Jesse Ventura), A fat redneck in a cowboy hat (Jim Ross), and a grown man with a crown and 13 year old Girlfriends (Lawler).

Jim Ross started out as a play by play man for football. A lot of wrestler's started out in football. Ernie Ladd, John Bradshaw, The Rock, Brian Pillman, Darren Drozdov, Steve McMicheal, Jim Neidhart, etc etc etc........

The XFL didn't get a fair chance........

What's wrong with allowing players to put whatever they want on their jerseys as a name?

It takes away from the seriousness of the game from allowing "He Hate Me" on the back of the jerseys. Although allowing them to name themselfs whatever they want is ok with me when it is combined with all the other angles and chances they put into the league it made taking the overal league serious questionable.

Thats my biggest problem with the NFL. It takes itself too serious.

Somebody trains and practices all offseason and the days inbetween games during the season to improve his skills. Then when he has that moment when all that hard work, training, coach in your ear, injuries pays off with a touchdown he cant celebrate? Some guys might push it but so what. If you dont wont them to celebrate, dont let them score.

Exactly, couldn't have put it better myself.. let the players celebrate a TD it doesn't hurt anything..

As far as the XFL goes, I don't think it had any chance to succeed at all as it was associated with the WWE(or at the time the WWF) so no one took it seriously, people thought it was just some stupid thing that wouldn't last. Plus the fact that no other football league can compete with the NFL, Arena Football is starting to gain some momentum but it's in part due to the coverage they get from sports shows and they get the coverage because of the famous owners of the teams such as former players and music artists ok

Although I enjoyed the XFL, it was kind of lame, especially the "super bowl" game for them where they win some money.. kind of a weak ending to a season especially compared to what the NFL does? Tongue

I liked the XFL while it lasted, I think some of the guys there had some real talent, and I'm sure some of them are now in the NFL or maybe NFL Europe. But then again, some people weren't the greatest and they're probably washing windows  Grin.

Vince Mcmahon should have hired someone else to run the XFL, and then it could have distanced itself from the 'fake' vibe it had the second the season started. People might have given it a chance.

Did I hit a nerve there?

Lighten up.? A ton of people didn't watch the XFL and some of the reason is because it's allegance to a known fake sport.? Excuse me, "sports entertainment".  It was pathetic how McMahon used every opportunity to convert football fans to wrestling fans.

Now excuse me, I have to Tivo "Raw".
