instead of the site's classic 'This page cannot be displayed', it now takes you to GN'R's 'Artists Direct' page.

for those who don't know, this site is liscened to Axl.

This is a big deal, actually.  (Well, if I believe what i've been told in the past, anyway) - I was told that gunsnroses.com would more than likely be the official site where all the 'good stuff' happens.  I don't know if that's still the plan - but if so, definitely a good sign.  Also, that site has been dormant for a LONG time - so the fact that they've even activated its IPs is intriguing, in and of itself.

BFD merged with Sanctuary, so that won't make a difference.

Exactly.  I'm sure Sanctuary owns the 'intellectual property' on this one.

i hope they take advantage of this site and use it as a way to directly deal with the fans, bc gnronline is bullshit, gunsnrosesonline is bullshit, htgth is the closest thing to an official site and thats how im sure all of us have been getting out gnr news.,

I don't see anything really positive for it. ? It's a sales engine. ?Looks like they're just trying to scoop some revenue. ?

No, there is no indication that this is an "official GNR site".   It's a site that sells GNR material.

But why would Axl or Sanctuary update a site with old pictures of GNR?

Wouldn't it be the new members?

 Huh

If they wanted to use it to sell more GNR albums they would have put it on Artist Direct about 4 years ago.

It's no coincidence that this is happening now.

Was GNR already on Artist Direct already?

It could be that the use of the domain is new, but GNR were already listed on there.

Exactly.? I'm sure Sanctuary owns the 'intellectual property' on this one.
Actually, it would be Axl, with Sanctuary doing the administration as Axl's management. ?

In the past with a lot of the artists signed to major labels, the label would secure and own the sites and they'd hang on to them even if the band left the label. ?The record company would (supposedly) use it to promote the catalogue, forcing the band to start up other sites under different (and often more awkward) names, leaving the fans pretty confused and the bands pretty pissed off. ?

If it's registered to Axl, it's likely that Rose and crew set up the site themselves to avoid that pitfall, but the label probably also has its own 'official' GN'R site. ?I guess there can be a lot of deals between all the factions -- ie: Axl's own site or not, it's just easier to link it to AD, or AD has an agreement with Sanctuary or whatever.? ?

But if a site registered to Axl has old band photos, then guaranteed he's not paying any attention to it, or its on hold. ?Somebody at Sanctuary may just be following the line of least resistance, or wallowing in indecision, or (the most likely sceneario) waiting for Axl to hand down 'the plan.'? They can't have a site with new photos if they're not even confirming who's in the band, or acknowledging the tour dates.? (As far as I can tell, all info has still come from the promoters, none from the band).
