To the average music fan who's heard the GNR hits and not very impressed.. ?

Hmm the other day I just talked to someone like that. I mentioned the ny shows to her as she has quite a few friends there, no actually in NJ.   She was like "uh-uh, but aren't they hard rock? " I automatically said "no not just hard rock". I don't know what GNR song suit her taste as she seems to like the songs she can sing like the singers do?wait,  maybe I should try the blues and maddy on her.

I'd say better or twat in general.
IRS for someone into classic rock. Silk worms If "someone" is into abstract art. Worth a try.

But I wouldn't really try to convert anyone.

i converted some of my boys a few years back with Civil War.  We were all wasted and when that guitar comes in at the beginning, i pulled a hot "windmill" air guitar riff, and they went ape shit... fucking loved it...   peace

Read the first post, lazybones.  no (not you surforia)

The subject is someone who probably knows those gnr hits, yet is not crazy about the songs.

If you had to pick one GNR song to play for the average music fan who is so-so on GNR, but has probably only heard the Radio-played hits,
which would you choose, in hopes of " converting " them ?

Mr Brownstone, because it was the first song I heard that wasnt one of the hits but thought was cool immediately. Or else Used to love her because its humourous and catchy and so many people can relate to it (not in the murder sense!)

To the people who are listing "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child O'Mine," I think you missed the original question.

I think I'd use either "Rocket Queen" or "Civil War" to convert someone to GNR that has only heard the hits on the radio. I've noticed a few people saying that they'd use "Estranged," but I really don't think that'd convert anybody. That songs takes some warming up to. When I first heard it, I wasn't that big a fan of it; I'd actually skip it on the CD. But now "Estranged" is my favorite song of all time.

I'd start slow with WTTJ, SCOM, PC, Patience and then move onto Don't Cry, Live & Let Die, Yesterdays, Nighttrain, Its So Easy.
Most important would be to use visuals. Show them videos of Welcome to the Videos, followed by performances from Ritz 1991, Paris 1992, Buenos Aires 1993, Felt Forum 1988, MTV VMA's 1988.

It might take a whole afternoon, but it'd be worth their time and mine,

It depends on the person you're playing music for.  On this note, at work today, I played the Boston boot of Maddy for some folks today.  About a minute or 2 into the song, she asked, "Are all the new songs this good?"  I proceeded to play IRS and Better.  She liked Maddy the best.  Later, I introduced CITR, which again was an instant, "I like it!"  My bro-in-law loved IRS from the 1st play, and he's pumped about the NY shows coming up.  We'll be there.  I played him the end to Better over the phone and he loved it too.  Another chick liked the 3 tracks (Maddy, IRS, and Better) I played for her.

GNR, especially new GNR, has something for everyone.  There Was a Time, still my personal fav., wasn't liked as much as the others...I think it's raw with tons of potential, but on 1st listen for non-Gunners it's a little tougher to get into I suppose.

Last note, I wouldn't try to convert anybody, just ask them to give it a try.  If they connect with the music, that's great, if not, it's their loss.  ok

If you really dislike someone, play them this 3-song medley:  My World, Silkworms, and Cornshucker!   rofl

Probably Breakdown, Better, and Nightrain...That pretty much sums up GNR with those 3 songs
