Flee the scene...

« on: March 28, 2006, 07:14:43 AM »

OK,

I was flying back from the UK and I had an idea.

If you want to release CD and have it happen leak free then do this:

Do not start cd pressing (when many leaks occur), release Chinese Democracy via iTunes in May 16 (for example)... but only release say 8 of the final 13 tracks for say $9.99 US. For that matter, some of the tracks may even be different mixes. However, when you download the album you get a "digital cupon" just like the digital booklets Apple offer. This cupon will be good at any Best Buy, Circuit City, Virgin, HMV etc. for $8.00 off Chinese Democracy, to be released on June 13th with all 13 tracks and an exclusive b-side availiable from iTunes on the same date when/if you enter your hard copy cd's UPC code. Thus, this will essentially sell 2 copies of Chinese Democracy to every and most any casual fan. I think most fans would not even bother with downloading the album with the intent to shell out the minimal $4 - $5 anyway on the 13th if only for the cover art.

What do you think?

That's way too complicated. That might work for die hards, but the average rock fan is not going to go through all of that.
The latest idea I've seen is the one Prince. He had "purple tickets" (similar to Willy Wonka's golden ticket) inserted in random CDs that were just released. If you got a purple ticket, you were invited to a free concert at his home in Los Angeles. The problem is the odds of getting a ticket are about 1 in 100,000.

This is unrealistic for most bands, but I think there will be a lof of new innovations to  encourage CD sales.

Too complicated. After 15 years, it should be  easy, not hard. And the easier the better.

I would just get it for free off the internet and then buy it if it were good enough, like I do with all albums I fancy.

I think that tracks will leak anyway.  Albums seem to be falling into the wrong hands a lot these days.  I can't see any way around it other than to kill anyone who handles the album prior to its release.  Of course, that would be illogical.  hihi

Yeah it was.

The plan isn't that complicated though. Simply release it on iTunes first, they do it all the time with EP's to get everyone rowleed up. How complicated is a cupon? You guys ever get a mail in rebate? People do that all the time, surely they can figure out a cupon?

Yeah, sometimes after spending only 15 minutes or so online my thoughts carry over... and sometimes, when nobody is looking and I am listening to a band... I even like think about them. Crazy!? Shocked

I'm afraid leak free is practically non-existant in this day and age, but let's get a date, then we'll speculate on promotional strategies...But, to your point, yes, i agree, how freakin' difficult is a coupon to comprehend?  I thought it was a brilliant, innovative idea.

You can't leak proof anything. Its pointless.

If Chinese Democracy came out that way, the very next day I could use Limewire to download the whole thing.

I said leak free not theft free. I was suggesting this as an option to minimize the likelyhood of the cd being pulled off the pressing assembly line by a minimum wage employee and uploaded to the internet before the official release date. If it stays in the same hands it has until the day of release then all we will get are songs Axl hands out to people, like the few we have now.
