Live versions don't help like they did with "charms/harm" but those bolded little words are there in the studio demo. It's almost impossible not to hear them when using headphones.

I think it's silly factoring in any live lyrics to these songs. Axl notoriously sings different lyrics to various songs. I'd go by the demo. That said, here's my interpretation of the lyrics:

But you can. You can regret the steps you took to get to a certain place in your life. Again think of steps as a metaphor.
