Have you seen this?

http://www.fireflymobile.com/

A cell phone for children.  I can't even comprehend who would think their child under 10 needs a cell phone.  I'm sure there are people who will buy it, but what the hell?  I just saw a commercial for it while watching cartoons with my 6  year old.  She didn't ask for it...she knows better.  But her best friend is already begging for it.  A 6 year old with a cell phone??

so do i.

naa. i think all children from the age they hang out without parental supervision should have a mobile phone for safety reasons. I can't think why a 6 year old should want one

This has been out for a while now, I can see the market, and at least the parent can program the numbers and set restrictions to the dialing, but I didn't "need" a cell phone until I was about 26 years old - and that was because I was commuting

Well I hope that any parent leaving their kid without supervision knows where they are leaving them, and that place has a phone.  And I can't see leaving an 8 year old some place without an adult, and most older children wouldn't want such a babyish cell phone.

Cell phones shouldn't be banned, idiots with cell phones should be banned.

For example, if you go to the movies, why would you go if you really need to take that important call?

that hasn't happened to me yet..I'll flip if it does Grin

if you're ever at a big airport, and you still have some time till your flight, sit down at your terminal and just look at all the suits run past talking loudly on the cell...I was almost impressed, thinking "wow, these dudes all have to be extremely important" hihi..no not really.
and even worse if they're on that..uh..walking machine. they walk fast enough already, if they're on that one, it looks like they're escaping from prison...I always get stressed when Im at a big airport from looking at those folks, but it's damn funny too. Grin

It's the guys on the train to work with the bluetooth headsets that really get me.. Can't it wait until they're at work?  It's crazy, it's like 7am.

its no surprise this product exists now...

if it makes a child feel safer though then im all for it...and im sure it will say that in the adverts for it...or the adverts make parents paranoid enough to buy one

im sure some will find it useful

If its a matter of safety, I'd buy my kid a GPS monitor before a cell phone.

I wonder though, will the parents that buy this for their little kids teach them how to use it politely?  Like, NOT in movie theaters, or restaurants, etc?

true......hey it would be good if you could get a tiny gps monitor thats inserted under the skin...never lose your child...of course big brother would love you...of course someone has probably invented one somewhere already lol

it depends on the parents...if it were me, then i would...not so sure about the general population though...plenty of ignorance there i guess

Well I "chipped" my dogs, I might as well chip my kid too, right?  But I was more thinking of the GPS bracelets that they have now.  Actually I just do my best to know where my child is and who she's with at all times.  I don't let her play in the park or front yard unattended, stuff like that.  Crazy paranoid, I know.

lmao

wow i didnt know you could get that sort of technology...i must start watching those tech programs again, they tend to be far too cheesy now

yea paranoid, but not surprising for the times we live in...better to keep your child safe, no regrets afterward...

So, is there any tread left on the tires? Or at this point would it be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway?

I don't see what the problem is.  I have 2 sons - ages 6 and 10.  They carry a cell phone when they go in the woods with their friends to ride dirt bikes and 4 wheelers just in case they need help.  It's also a way to call them home without searching for them.
