He had a two year contract, and when it expired, he went back to NIN. After they finished touring, he re-joined Guns.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember he left simply because his contract was up and he didn't bother signing another one because at the time he thought that the album would never be finished and thus there was no point in remaining a member of the band. And then I assume when Axl said that they were going to be playing the shows in Vegas and Rio Robin saw some actual action in the gnr camp and decided to rejoin to be a part of it. Again, I could be wrong about all of this, but that's what I seem to remember occuring even though most of that was just based on rumors.
