Petty Finishing New Album, Plots Tour

March 17, 2006, 10:25 AM ET

In support of the album, Petty and the Heartbreakers will tour extensively in 2006, with dates concentrated in the June-July and September-October time frames. True to form, they will try something different.

"What we're trying to do is a bunch of shows with different artists that either we like or think would be an interesting show," Petty manager Tony Dimitriades tells Billboard. "One of the main things we're doing is a bunch of shows with Pearl Jam. We're also talking to John Mayer about doing some dates, as well as the Strokes."

"And maybe in the occasional show there will be a friend [to] come on the road with us for a few days," he continues. "

Just think If Axl played a few US dates for Tom Petty maybe Boston, NY, Philly, and Chicago or something. I am sure CC would back Axl on this. Not sure if Petty would go on first, but this would be a kick ass show. Gnr have no dates for Sept-Oct so why not do it with Petty

You think a Tom Petty crowd would go together with a GNR crowd?   I don't know, those two bands aren't much alike.

Why would Axl want to play for Tom Petty?  If he wants to start off touring in the US he should do smaller venues, then work up to bigger arenas like MSG.

Why would Axl want to play for Tom Petty?

You saw the VMAs when Axl and Petty did Free Falling and Come Together ( I think that was the 2nd song) right?

As for if their crowds would mix fine. Most people that like Gnr like Tom Petty and vice versa. Gnr fans and Petty fans mix better than PJ and Petty fans or the other bands mentioned by Petty.

dave,

Second song was Heartbreak Hotel.

As far as Petty / GNR goes - I like the idea, but I doubt it would happen.  The demographics are just too different in the fanbases, I think.

Oh that is right, thanks, he did Come Together with Springsteen years later. I know it wont happen but Axl needs something like this for CC to back him in the USA again.  The one way Axl gets backed again in the usa by CC is if he puts a deposite down for every show that he loses if he no shows.

Naah, he'll get CC to promote the tour once the Euro dates go well. Memories tend to be short and forgiving when there's money involved.

I woul like to see Petty and GNR tour for sure.  But I would make a safe wager and say perhaps GNR and NIN, or Tool.

Is there a chance that in order to get CC and the insurers etc to do a US tour, Axl is having to do this leg of European dates first without a hitch as kinda proof that they can get a tour going without a riot etc? Just a thought.

I don't think Axl will return to the US without the album or a single after what happened in 02. I think he'll want to be sure and do it right this time. That's why I think he is playing Europe and places he didn't last time around. I think the festivals and gigs will be warm up/promotional gigs with a single around that time, then the album and a US tour.

Hey, personally I would love it.  Realistically though, the best I think we could hope for is a drop-in, guest-appearance with Petty on a GNR rest-day......Tom: "and now I'd like to introduce an old friend...Mr. Axl Rose."     peace

The only thing I see happening is Merck and Petty's manager getting together to drink some ouzo since they're both Greek.

No way a tour like this could happen.

I mean, GN'R fans and Tom Petty fans?  Shocked I love Tom Petty but I don't think many people would like to see that combination in one night...

You can't listen to Better or Welcome To The Jungle and then listen to Into The Great Wide Open or Mary Jane's Last Dance. It just doesn't fit...

This would definitely be kick ass, im a huge tom petty fan and a huge gnr fan.

could i see the two artists doing it? hell yeah, axel and petty are actually pretty good freinds from what ive gathered from tom petty interviews and such.
unfortunitely i see illusion era gnr fitting this mold easier then the current one, unless the album is more like catcher in the rye.

in the end, unless something huge happens with gnr though, like a cd release, im not holding my breath for any USA dates.

i notice petty said a friend helping out, maybe only axl would show up for a couple songs? its probably really going to be dylan or jeff lynn (who helped write the new album).

still, would be cool...

he has a hippie or country rock sound now, but in the 70s 80s he had some good rock tunes.
